Look at what just happened! I have been voted one of the Top 20 Women in Ground Engineering!
I am deeply humbled and overwhelmed by this recognition from my peers. The path for female engineers in our industry has historically been challenging, but witnessing the evolution and progress over the years fills me with hope. Yet, there's more ground to cover in nurturing inclusivity and diversity.
Rewind to 2010 - the Tottenham Court Road Station Upgrade was my initiation into a senior project leadership role. Nestled in the heart of Central London, adjacent to the iconic Centre Point, this project was a formidable challenge, made even more daunting under the client's and London Underground's vigilant eyes (many fond memories of looking down a 'rat' hole come to mind...). Tasked with constructing a D-shaped pile, a feat some of my peers deemed 'unbuildable', full of determination, I was blissfully unaware of these doubts. It was an opportunity to call upon the collective strength of my team, to blend our skills and drive into something extraordinary.
This project wasn't just about constructing a complex structure; it was a testament to teamwork, meticulous planning, and valuing every voice at the table. It taught me that leadership isn't about individual glory; it's about creating an environment where everyone thrives, contributes, and grows – a value I have carried forward throughout my career. Looking back, I realise that our most significant achievement wasn't just building the structure but building each other up in the process!
To all aspiring engineers, especially women in this industry, remember that your work ethic, commitment to your team, and ability to help and respect others along your journey are your most valuable assets.
