The leading global education & advocacy campaign accelerating gender balance and diversity on corporate boards. #5050WOB

About us

50/50 Women on Boards™ is the leading nonprofit global education & advocacy campaign committed to advancing gender balance and diversity on corporate boards. In 2010 we launched 2020 Women on Boards, now 50/50 Women on Boards, to educate, advocate and collaborate with corporations and action groups committed to advancing women to corporate boards. Reaching and exceeding our initial goal of 20% women directors by 2020, our new campaign boldly calls for women to hold 50% of all corporate board seats and women of color to hold at least 20% of corporate board seats. Our proprietary 50/50 Women on Boards Gender Diversity Index™ transparently tracks women's progress on Russell 3000 Index company boards. Quarterly and annually, we analyze the data and disseminate insights to encourage meaningful change across all levels of leadership. If you are a woman aspiring to serve on a board or board-ready, we offer interactive workshops with experienced corporate directors to give you the tools to pursue a corporate board seat. We invite all to participate in our public awareness campaigns and tentpole events, including our Global Conversation on Board Diversity™. If you are a corporation searching for ways to elevate your DE&I efforts for your employees, clients, or key stakeholders, we encourage you to get involved by partnering with our campaign or hosting a corporate board program for women in your network. More than 80% of our revenue funds our research, educational programs, and public awareness campaigns. Get involved: www.5050wob.com Have questions? Email: info@5050wob.com

CEO of 50/50 Women on Boards | Independent Board Director @Goodwill Southern Calif. | Let's Go!!

As the CEO of 50/50 Women on Boards, I am deeply concerned by the President's recent decision to place all federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) employees on paid leave. Additionally, his directive for the attorney general to develop a plan deterring private-sector from adopting or continuing DEI programs and an placing an order to ensure that federal funds will not be used to promote gender inclusivity, undermines years of progress toward creating inclusive workplaces and equitable representation across industries. It also sends a clear and troubling message about perpetuating systemic inequities. At 50/50 Women on Boards, we’ve spent 15 years driving gender balance and diversity on corporate boards. Yet as of June 30, 2024, women hold only 30% of board seats in Russell 3000 companies, and women of color represent just 8%. These figures underscore the critical need for sustained DEI efforts to address systemic barriers and foster inclusion. Dismantling these efforts sends a concerning signal about our nation’s commitment to diversity. Framing this decision as a return to "merit-based" hiring—while disregarding the structural obstacles many groups face—undermines fairness and progress. These actions threaten not only to stall advancement but also to reverse the hard-fought gains achieved over decades. Policymakers and leaders have a responsibility to strengthen, not weaken, initiatives that promote diversity and equity. By doing so, we can build a more inclusive and representative society that reflects the richness of our collective talent and potential. We must remain vigilant and united in advocating for equity, opportunity, and progress. #representationmatters #equalrights #opportunityforall ---- "Mr. Trump is also directing the attorney general to create a plan to deter the private sector from adopting or continuing DEI programs. "As a part of this plan, each agency shall identify up to nine potential civil compliance investigations of publicly traded corporations, large non-profit corporations or associations, foundations with assets of 500 million dollars or more, State and local bar and medical associations, and institutions of higher education with endowments over 1 billion dollars," Tuesday's order read. The orders also includes a review of spaces that have been renamed under DEI initiatives. It's unclear how they will affect the private sector. A Trump administration official Monday advised businesses to "wait and see" how further guidance will pertain to them."

  • Today, President Joe Biden formally recognized the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution—the most substantive advancement of women’s rights since the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote in 1920. This amendment affirms that “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex,” permanently enshrining gender equality into the foundation of our nation’s laws and ushering in a new era for gender parity. At 50/50 Women on Boards, we celebrate this monumental achievement as a critical step toward building a more equitable future. The ERA strengthens the foundation for fair and inclusive workplaces, opening doors for women, women of color, and marginalized genders to lead at the highest levels. While this momentous decision lays the groundwork for progress, the fight for true equality continues. Together, we will keep pushing for diverse leadership and representation—not just in boardrooms, but in every space where equality matters. 🚨 Ambition is not a dirty word. 🚨I wrote for MSNBC/Know Your Value about how ambition—especially in women—is often treated like a problem. Spoiler alert: It’s not. 🎯 In 2014, a mentor told me, “Your ambition scares people. Tone it down.” This only confirmed one thing: my ambition was her insecurity. Fast-forward to today, and I wear that critique like a badge of honor. 🙌🏾 Your ambition isn’t the issue; the systems that hinder it are. As we dive into 2025, we can each: ➡️ Build a personal "advisory board"—an ally, a mentor, a sponsor. ➡️ Challenge organizations to make leadership pipelines equitable and inclusive. ➡️ Never let anyone tell you to “tone it down.” 💡 Read my full op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/ezMGFcsj Tag your allies, mentors, and sponsors below. Let’s make this the year women’s leadership transforms everything. 👇🏾 #Leadership #Ambition #WomenAtWork #DEI #BlackWomenLead

  • The recent ruling striking down Nasdaq’s board diversity rule is a significant setback for transparency and progress in corporate governance. At 50/50 Women on Boards, we know that diverse boards are essential for fostering innovation, better decision-making, and stronger performance. In this Bloomberg article by Jeff Green, Simone Foxman, and Katherine Doherty, our CEO Heather Marie Spilsbury highlights the ripple effects of California's gender mandate and why investors continue to demand transparency on board diversity—even as legal challenges threaten these efforts. While Nasdaq concedes this ruling, Goldman Sachs remains committed to its diversity requirements. What will it take for companies to maintain momentum in the face of growing resistance? Read more for insights from Heather, Jared L. Landaw, and Rob Du Boff, CFA: https://lnkd.in/gG-Rfx4Z. Let’s continue the conversation. How can we keep pushing for gender-balanced and diverse boards in a shifting landscape?

    Managing Diversity Reporter

In 2020, an observer could be forgiven for thinking the US might be considering something akin to a quota system for women on boards like was already gaining steam in Europe. California was mandating gender minimums and Goldman Sachs said it wouldn't underwrite IPOs for companies that lacked a diverse board. Later that year, Nasdaq joined in, saying it was also going to ask listed companies to add diverse members, with a focus on women, or explain why they couldn't. First the California law was struck down by courts in 2022. And this week, the Nasdaq rule suffered the same fate. Only Goldman's mandate remains. I assisted my Bloomberg News colleagues Simone Foxman and Katherine Doherty, along with Andrew Ramonas and Sridhar Natarajan in adding some reporting for your weekend reading.
