TODAY @ CREATIVE FUTURE Festival Beyond Concrete: Building a Path for the Future of Atlanta’s Westside Tabea Fahr, Taylor Coles, Ingeborg M. Rocker, PhD. and Rusty Smith explore the challenges and opportunities of redeveloping Atlanta’s Westside. One of Atlanta’s most salient and popular planning gems, the Atlanta Beltline, was conceived within an academic context and enthusiastically adopted by the city government. It is a great piece of planning that has energized and connected neighborhoods across the city, but has also catalyzed the displacement of legacy residents within those neighborhoods. Later phases of The Beltline trail system offer an opportunity for a second chance. What can we from academia, city government, and the development world do to achieve better outcomes on the Westside which include historic Vine City and English Avenue? 3 Reasons to Attend: — Learn strategies for creating inclusive, resilient urban spaces. — Discover how urban design can balance community needs with progress. — Get insights into one of Atlanta’s most significant redevelopment projects. Date: Saturday, September 28, 2024 Time: 9:00 AM — 5:00 PM Location: Fourth Ward Offices (Tower 2), 505 N Angier Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30308 Parking: On-site 1,800-space parking deck Tickets: $75 Secure your spot today. https://lnkd.in/ejxTW7xY Activate to view larger image,

One of CannonDesign ambitions, The Big Rethink, is all about flipping the tables on conventions and embracing the unexpected. SRG + CannonDesign did exactly that when designing two parking garages for a renowned athletic company. These next-generation structures redefine the typical parking experience by prioritizing placemaking and creating substantial spaces for pedestrian and recreational use. By rethinking the design and purpose of buildings like parking structures, we can transform mundane moments into opportunities for inspiration and connection, fundamentally reshaping what it means to navigate our cities and communities. 🚗 Learn more in this piece by Aaron Pleskac: https://lnkd.in/gi-4aCJh

In case you were wondering how the merger is going, here is an example of the parallels between SRG Partnership and CannonDesign - a project that clearly supports CannonDesign's ambitions, designed and delivered by SRG well before the merger. Like minds and strategic alignment make for smooth transitions here at SRG + CannonDesign.

Big changes could be on the horizon for Congress Avenue... Congress Avenue Urban Design Initiative (CAUDI) has proposed transforming a section of Congress Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly plaza. The initiative suggests turning the blocks between 7th and 11th streets into a vibrant community space featuring interactive art installations, pop-up exhibits, live music performances, and free programming. CAUDI’s vision also includes painting the asphalt with murals that could change over time, replacing parking zones with decks, and improving the health of trees. According to ATX Today, a large portion of the project has already secured funding through the 2020 Austin Mobility Bond. The balance of the project still awaits financing. Austin residents can voice their opinions on the proposed designs at the Downtown Austin Space Activation events on October 22nd and 26th. Austinites, what are your thoughts on these proposed changes? #austinrealestate #residentialrealestate #amyklinerealtor

Underutilized POPs (Privately Owned Public Spaces) is one way to break a placemakers heart. 💔💔 They are a missed opportunity to create vibrant communities, increase foot traffic, and stimulate local economies. This Bloomberg article explores POPs in New York City, highlighting that "many of these publicly owned private spaces will disappear if developers don’t see any use for them beyond the upfront incentive." Creative Placemaking can revitalize POPs, transforming them into lively, attractive areas for everyone to enjoy. This process involves more than just installing structures in plazas and expecting results. It requires cultivating a sense of place through local culture, art, and community engagement. By doing so, these spaces become more engaging and beneficial for the community. Simply building these spaces and hoping people will come is not enough; we need to foster community involvement and cultural integration actively. 🦽 "My first job out of college was helping design new wheelchair models that were adapted to the context of Guatemala, for rural areas where terrain is very hard to traverse. To see people use the chair—the freedom that it afforded them—was very powerful to me. I haven't looked back since." Juan Carlos Noguera is an industrial designer and an assistant professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He receives a Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Design—a $50,000 award—for his use of design as a tool to empower accessibility and equity. The Vilcek Foundation has produced a video on Noguera with our colleagues at Smartypants.
