From Turbulence to Smoother Sailing | Metagerontologist | The Versatile Social Worker | 2-0 vs. Open-Heart Surgery | Speaker and Serial Podcast Guest | MSW, MPH, PhD 🎓
The social work profession doesn't care about people as much as it says it does. This is true for the world in general. I've been turned down or had to decline multiple job opportunities that required in-person work, even though -- in my opinion -- the reasons for the in-person work over remote are arbitrary. Here are the reasons that moving for a job (or anything) is challenging for me: - I have complex medical needs that require regular access to high-quality healthcare, which I have now and which is hard to find. - I have caregiving needs, as my mom also has complex medical issues. My brother's family is also down here, but he too has major chronic disease and a child with severe disability. Either I leave my mom in his care, or she comes with me and my family, in which case see the first bullet point. - Most of these positions (being in higher ed and being in social work) have crappy pay. Asking me to move my entire family, especially considering the above points, is preposterous at best. And here's the real kicker: social workers and the entire social work profession are supposed to be fighting to advocate for individuals affected by the kinds of issues above. Instead, social work plays right into the hands of the societal status quo far more than it does anything to change the narrative. Tell me I'm wrong.

I encourage grieving adults and communities to discover their safe spaces in order to give themselves permission to grieve.
Happy Tuesday from your favorite Community Social Worker! Did you know Social Work is made up of 3 components? SOCIAL WORK DOES NOT STOP AT CASE MANAGEMENT OR BECOMING A THERAPIST. The three components are: 1.) Micro 2.) Mezzo 3.) Macro I am always speaking on how I am a community Social Worker (Macro) but best believe I am the best at all 3. A true social worker knows what they’re competent in. But also knows just because you’re good at it doesn’t mean you should do it. (That’s a word for some professionals out there today.) I could be a therapist; I am absolutely good at it. But I don’t want to. I could work with kids. Yall kids love me but nope. I know how to do case management but I’m good on it! 📓Stop limiting Social Workers. 📓I have saved multiple directors and they have taken all the credit. And have tried to deem me as just the social worker, but best believe my work speaks for itself. 📓I got my MSW because society told me I would be a director and then turned around and said they ain’t have the money. But best believe I have leveraged myself with my MSW. 📓 I created my own community organization because I saw a need. 📓This is true Social Worker. We’re the voice. The change makers. We advocate for the world. You know how many policies I’ve advocated for in Education, Nursing, Counseling, homelessness and the list goes on. If you want change in your organization; hire a Social Worker. I bet you I could create the environment, bridge the gap between you and your clients, advocate and change policy all at once! Now I might be late on my notes but I bet your organization would be a lot healthier! See a Social Worker; Pay a Social Worker! Thank a Social Worker. Recognize a Social Worker. Go to their link. Buy the book. Buy the shirt. Book the consultation. Educate yourself on Social Work! Happy Social Work month!
