Patent activity is down - does that mean anything about innovation? I think it is the dream of every engineer... to have a patent. I had some ideas. Even applied for one. But I stopped before earning one. I think it was patent worthy. In my corporate life, I was tasked to test something our company had a patent on. As I was getting into the design and test prep, I came up with a more efficient method. Likely a more effective one. Something we could actually build as a prototype! When I discussed it with our patent board, I was rejected. Why? "We already have coverage in that space now." It felt like a strange reaction. So - I never was granted a patent. I think it is important to share that fact. I have continued to be interested in patents, as I have always been a fan of innovation. Innovation is "creativity brought to market." I've spent my corporate and consulting life doing work in this area. When I recently saw that patent awards are down, it made me think. Does that mean innovation is down? Or - does it have anything to do with real innovation? At times, patents are created to block others. The true innovations may be hidden or secret. What does this mean to us? In my observation of companies, I sense we are not being very innovative lately. Many products are just reproductions. Instead of 3 mouse traps, we sell 2 of them in a package. Small companies are innovative, but are limited by the funding they can obtain. Funding is challenging from everything I see and hear.
