Tesla has opened up their charging network to Ford vehicles. It will be interesting to see how it affects Tesla, but it seems like a big win for the EV industry. One of the things holding EVs back is charging infrastructure. What do you think? Is this a good move for Tesla? (article link in first comment)
It is a HUGE win for electrics. Access to the Tesla Supercharger network is worth >20k per vehicle, probably over 40k in my view. Here's some relevant details: 1. The truck, as pictured, is in the wrong spot. It should be one to the left. This will be a problem for Ford, Chevy, and Rivian, but not Nissans. 2. Ford CCS converters are under serious backlogs. September ship dates and climbing. 3. Only SOME Tesla superchargers will allow non Tesla charging (mostly installs within the past year) 4. Tesla is rapidly cutting out bollards and signs to allow other brands to fit better. 5. The primary problem is Tesla's ridiculously short cord and dumb back in design. They are shifting charger bases to be centered in the stall to be more brand agnostic, but aren't doing anything to move to a superior pull beside design. 6. Tesla's existing design precludes even carrying bikes and charging. Non Teslas should try hard to use the charger on either end, leaving the middles for Teslas. This may include hopping the curb, sticking out into traffic and other non-ideal parking jobs. They should also use a CCS charger instead if there is one nearby. Let's all go be awesome together.
The article states that “Ford’s Tesla Charging Adapter is Good for Tesla, Ford and the EV Industry”. Good for everyone - except for Ford and Tesla EV Owners who now have to deal with increased competition for access to charging stations. I believe it’s only a matter of time before we start hearing Tesla owners complaining about Fords blocking their access to Tesla chargers.
