To my fellow creative recruiters, I know we can do better. Here's an easy one we can all start doing today! First, have a look at the work the candidates are sending you. For example, an Art Director in Key Art is different from an Art Director in Motion Design working on AV or Digital. We need to be creative experts, not just hoping the Job Title "Art Director" is enough. Our job is to make the process easier, not more difficult. I hear from candidates all the time telling me about recruiters who pitch them jobs that aren't even close to what they do. This makes them less likely to get on the phone and speak with other recruiting agencies that actually understand creative work. So what are the steps, Justin? You might be asking. Well, Most creatives include their portfolio links in their contact information on LinkedIn or they will gladly send it to you via email password-protected Another clue is to look at their skills section. This extra step can save a lot of headaches and make the hiring process more fluid across our industry. #CreativeRecruiter #CreativeAgency #AgencyRecruitment

I connect creative support talent with leading companies in the Built Environment and Design sectors
Let’s talk about TRANSFERABLE SKILLS. Within the built environment and design sectors there are many support roles which are broad. A PA could also be managing bids or posting content on social media, a marketing manager could also be involved in business development, a graphic designer could be doing the content as well as the design and don’t get me started on studio managers! They are the jack of all trades! Often titles can be misleading so you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover! Often candidates can be overlooked for roles where their job title doesn’t match the vacancy. That’s where recruiters come in! Dig a little deeper and you’ll find they have the relevant experience or transferable skills for the role. I love working with clients who trust my judgement and are open to meeting candidates who do not look suitable at first glance but could be the perfect fit. This also means that a candidate can pivot into a slightly different role which they are more than capable of doing. So, if you are a hiring manager struggling to find someone who ticks all the boxes, put your trust in your recruiter and be open-minded because often the best candidates are those who are given the opportunity to try a slightly different path.

We've been totally overwhelmed by the amount of applications we've recieved (we've recieved more than 400 Applications in the last week alone) and I wanted to give share some advice from a recruiters perspective to save everyone involved some time: 1.) Make sure you've read the prerequesites for the job you apply for properly. It's fine to deviate from them, but if so please mention it in your email! 2.) PDFs may contain malicious content, so please put all the essential info in plain text in your email. 3.) Everyone is applying to several jobs at the same time. We're aware of that. So imho you can just skip the "i love your studio INSERTNAMEHERE because of XY" part if you're copy pasting it anyways. 4.) Your artstation link alone is not enough for us to understand if our position could be a good fit for you Bear in mind that our perspective is special as we're a small studio without a dedicated HR position. Our needs may be more pragmatic than for other companies. By the way we're still looking for some new team members for our biggest project yet (see https://lnkd.in/evA_5qJV)!

"How do you find and hire your people?" This is one of the most common questions I get asked. Recruiting talent is already one of the toughest jobs for an business owner. ...but recruiting Graphic Recorders?? That's a whole 'nother thing. First, we look for the basics --> confident drawing skills✏️, ability to think and synthesize ideas🧠, ability and willingness to travel to cool places for gigs✈️. Then, we look for the extra magic --> great people skills😁, a squishy cultural connection❤️, embedded values of integrity & positivity🙌. And where we find them? Well...lots of places. 📍 We have successful Graphic Recorders who come out of the comics world, the UX world, the industrial engineering world. 📍 We have some with backgrounds in street art, fine art, or no art at all. 📍 We have storyboarders and surf(boarders) 📍 In fact, one of our Graphic Recorders, the amazing Kent Carollo, even had brief stint in Biology. And the list goes on and on. I wish there was one well to draw from when recruitng Graphic Recorders...but there isn't. And that, I think, is what makes this work so darn special. ✨ --- (PS - If you or someone you know is ever interested in learning more about being a Graphic Recorder at the Sketch Effect, shoot me a note!)

A portfolio is crucial for editors and designers as it showcases their skills and experience. ⚡It acts as a visual resume, highlighting their best work and demonstrating their capabilities. ⚡A well-organized portfolio helps potential clients or employers quickly see the quality and range of their work. ⚡For designers, it can include graphic design projects, layouts, and branding examples. ⚡For editors, it may feature edited documents, articles, or media projects. ⚡A strong portfolio reflects a professional’s style, creativity, and proficiency. ⚡It also shows how they solve problems and meet client needs. ⚡An updated portfolio can set them apart in a competitive job market. ⚡Additionally, it builds credibility and can lead to more job opportunities. Overall, a compelling portfolio is essential for attracting and securing work. #videoeditors #videoeditorservice #desigers #editors

The number I never I knew I needed... How I beat the Utilisation Trap and gained creative capacity. One of the biggest barriers to growing the Design Studio within a creative agency was the utilisation rates of our designers. (Utilisation = Billed time / Total Employed Time). Does this sound familiar? 🏆 Win a big project but then... Resourcing: "The team is already at capacity - we can start in 6 weeks" 📋 So, let's hire a new creative... Management: "To justify a new higher, you need above target utilisation of your team for 3 months..." ⏰ In the meantime... Creatives: ""I'm burned out - oh and I found a new job - ciao!"" 📋 So you interview... 100 applications and a week later... Potential hire: ""I can start in 12 weeks..."" And so the cycle continues... How have you resolved your creative needs without hiring? #WASSAA #CreativeServices #OnDemandDesign #DesignResourcing

Navigating the (Sometimes Bumpy) NYC Job Search: A Global Creative's Journey: Happy Saturday, network! As the buzz about New York's "talent shortage" continues, I thought I'd share a slice of my own job search experiences in the city. Let's just say, it's been an...interesting adventure.) Attached in comments is that screenshot of questions including “what is your religion?” that perfectly captures the "little joys" of NYC job applications that I ran into as I apply for design jobs: those dreaded red stars demanding answers to questions that have zero bearing on design/art/creative and soft skills. Age, accent origins, personal life – it seems some interview processes have a thirst for details beyond portfolio and experience. Now it’s religion?! Well; remember first Amendment? Well I believed in USA because of it’s values and secularism and how constitution is protected. (Can’t say same in another place I know deeply) To those recruiters and studios: My accent doesn't code in InDesign. My age doesn't define my design thinking. And my family's religious rich tapestry (or no religious choice at all) has zero effect on my ability to craft a winning brand identity and packaging design, that speaks to a global crowd. Instead of dissecting my background, let's focus on what truly matters: creativity, collaboration, and a passion for pushing design boundaries. My portfolio speaks volumes about my skills and experience. Let's judge that, not my birth certificate or marital status. This isn't just about me, it's about building a more inclusive creative landscape. A world where talent is judged by its merit, not its backstory. Where diverse voices and perspectives are celebrated, not scrutinized. You can not put a shape, color, race to religion, being a good human comes from doing the right thing. It’s the light we hold in our hearts. 🫶🏼 So, to my fellow creators out there navigating the NYC maze: keep your heads up, stay true to your vision, and trust in the power of your craft. The right fit will come, one where your skills and artistry are valued for what they truly are – superpowers of creation. ✨ Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some portfolios to polish and interviews to prepare for (with questions for them, this time!) PS: Don’t judge me with my national origin or what politicians are speaking about. Just like managements, politicians come and go. Art and people stay. Do the right thing and let go of your hidden bias in your hiring decisions, please. #NYCJobs #DesignThinking #InclusionMatters #CreativityOverBias #opentowork #openforbusiness #nyc #nyctalent #designmanager #inclusiveemployment #inclusiveworkplace
