What does it mean to target someone? The miracle of digital marketing was supposed to be its ability to target people. They said it would give brands the ability to talk one-on-one instead of one-to-many. They said everyone could finally be advertised according to who they are, etc. Do you know how many people you’d employ to do that? More copywriters than Publicis Groupe have account executives. Perhaps one day, we will be able to do that with A.I. But even then, that’s not a one-on-one conversation. Why am I talking about this? This weekend is the Jewish holiday of Purim. So, I thought I’d showcase some examples of mainstream brands wishing their Jewish customers a happy Purim. I figured that with all the personalized targeting going on, I could find a few. I found one. A Maxwell House ad from 1964 by Joseph Jacobs Advertising. I’ve written before about Maxwell Houses' Jewish marketing strategy. To this day, the Maxwell House Haggadah is the most used Haggadah at the Passover Seder. My point is this: I had no problem finding ads about St. Patricks Day. Targeting has nothing to do with digital. It has to do with caring. You’d be surprised how much of an impact a simple public ad like this one can have on a niche group of customers. Especially when it’s done en masse instead of one-to-one. And especially when it comes from a brand that could survive just fine without them. Leanne makes a great point about making sure your PR stories are evergreen, or at least, semi-regularly relevant. One of my biggest strategies for any client I work with is to *constantly* update stories that have worked before - it's called a news cycle for a reason. This doesn't mean sending out the same release as the last time, but instead, refreshing your data, your expert comments, your PR hooks to make them even MORE relevant than they were before and NOT the exact same thing you sent last time. I also really love it when I see a journo looking for similar stories, as it gives me an idea of how to tweak that previous story just so to make it perfect for them this time around. Journos are the ones who know what's going to make a good story, so don't sleep on the topics they're asking about. --- I am available from June to help get your brand in front of the right people through clever storytelling and targeted outreach. Never underestimate the power of a reangle. Recently I had a story for a client which did ok but didn't land everywhere we wanted. For my clients I anticipate this and put in place a strategy to mitigate risks and not put all my eggs into one basket, meaning we had other activity to go out with to keep results coming in besides this. Two months later we saw a national industry awareness day was being launched for the first time, which tied perfectly into our story. Instead of continuing with all new activity, I revised strategy to update our past piece and make it targeted to this new awareness event. It worked perfectly and landed links for my client in some highly authoritative and relevant niche media sites that they wanted to be featured in. In PR it can be easy to move on quickly to the next thing and assume something hasn't worked, but there is a lot to be said for refreshing your old content and giving it new life to fit into a changing media news cycle. The greats of the radio advertising copywriting world would drill this into us back in the heyday of The Metro Radio Group and the genesis of the Creative Led Sell. “Who is the the advertiser wanting to talk to Rog?” Erm - Female shoppers… “You can do better than that, who specifically?” OK, female shoppers who like new clothes… “C’mon, describe them as an individual who are they, what do they like, not like?” Eventually, after much exasperation on their part we would hopefully get to something like this…. “Betty is strong and independent, loves fashion and loves a bargain, but is concerned about the impact mass production has on the environment and the vulnerable women exploited in its manufacture.” BINGO!
