If you eat chicken and pork, hopefully you'll care about the conditions in which animals are reared and killed. In a world of intentionally confusing labelling by food producers and supermarkets, the government is currently running a consultation on mandatory, standardised food labelling so that shoppers can genuinely tell if animals have been treated well and killed humanely (well, you know what I mean). Two-thirds of people find labelling about animal welfare opaque.
I contacted RSPCA Assured to check the scope of the consultation and they've advised that unfortunately: "The consultation set out by the UK Government currently applies to all unprocessed pork, chicken and eggs and certain prepacked and loose minimally processed products with pork, chicken or egg." They'd like it to go further, as would I, in fact it would be great if it eventually covered processed foods, but I guess it's a start.
Anyway, here's link to the RSPCA Assured webpage if you want to submit your response. It's very easy - all you have to do is provide your details and your submission is processed automatically without having to complete any detailed forms. Sign up and share if you can. It closes in a couple of weeks.
PS I tried the veganism thing but it didn't work for me.
