This past week gave me a true, up close and personal view of real labor - the elbow grease, monkey wrench, heavy lift, out in 109*F heat kind of labor - and how it makes communities all around our country better. And this particular labor project behind me, being headline worthy, is a rare thing! Typically it’s silent, behind the scenes, maybe even at night, get the job done so things can move on type of labor. And yet, I know I’m guilty of even groaning or getting irritated at a road under construction, an out of order sign, or a work in progress placard. This #LaborDay, don’t just cook burgers and drink a few cold ones. Think about the supply chain and logistics work, the transportation time, the pre-dawn deliveries, the warehousing, the sorting, the safety, and the hard work that went into making that cookout possible. Think about the roads that were built, the refrigerator trucks manufactured + driven, the fuel produced and transported to power it all. The farmers, the feed, the processing, the harvest, the canning, the factories, the hard hats, the construction, the loading and unloading, and so much more. Labor Day isn’t about a day off. It’s a day to celebrate the intricate dance of interconnected parts that enable the lifestyle we enjoy in this country. It’s a day to celebrate how we depend on each other to make this thing work. Now, go enjoy that cold one and burger. And celebrate your own labor too 😉
