During 23 years of a career in human services, I have come to see how housing policy is more than bricks and mortar. That for such a long time, people were looking to HUD and it's budget to fix the housing crisis that really has never not been an issue; that housing only gets back into the public conscience when we as a collective whole see encampments of those experiencing homelessness, see people living in cars, when we need to leave an abusive relationship or a property where landlords do nothing to keep up with their responsibilities and still increase rent, or the phenomenon of young adults living with parents, and so much more. Yet, cost of housing is not the issue and sometimes it is not necessarily the supply. It is about focusing on wage disparity, lack of a fair and just wage, the lack of a basic income in the US compared to European Counterparts, a holistic transportation system where there is access to jobs, universal childcare where we have daycare centers open 24-7 that reflect our changing economy, and also to really address mental health in a way that de-stigmatizes. This report and the purpose of this Interagency work is just a start. But, having no policy of simply an economic and supply and demand focus misses the mark due to the complexity when we say housing is more than bricks and mortar

"People end up homeless for all kinds of reasons, but the leading cause of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing... By stigmatizing homelessness, we point the fingers at people on the street who cannot fix the affordable housing crisis." With the rapid rise in rents and housing prices along with a sharp increase in the cost of living in recent years, many in our communities are just one unexpected medical bill, one car repair, or a missed paycheck away from losing their homes. And once someone loses their housing stability and falls into homelessness, it is extremely difficult to climb back out. Stigmatizing and criminalizing homelessness makes it even harder. Please hear me when I say that there is a clear urgency to take action towards fixing our affordable housing crisis. We have to work together to remove barriers and support building abundant housing that is affordable at all income-levels. Let’s start by asking our neighbors, our city leaders, our legislators and ourselves, “What can we do to help solve our housing problem?” Our communities can't fully thrive until ALL of us have access to decent and affordable housing! #affordablehousing #homelessness #housingcrisis https://lnkd.in/gYab3f-P
