When the The Trevor Project launched its annual national survey, Dr. Myeshia N. Price, who was the nonprofit’s director of Research Science, and her colleagues wanted a more holistic picture of LGBTQ young people and their mental health, especially predictors and risk factors related to suicide. “We wanted our survey to address what we know theoretically affects their wellbeing.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eeb6-Y9u #lgbtq #lgbtqia #lgbtqyouth #youth #mentalhealth This article was originally published on November 15, 2022.

In a year predicated by the heartbreaking and untimely death of Nex Benedict, our research team wanted to prioritize the impact of anti-LGBTQ+ school policies on the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people. Because where you go to school (and what you experience there) matters. Here’s what we found: Nearly ⅓ of those youth we surveyed reported attending a school with at least one anti-LGBTQ+ policy — and nearly half of those young people also reported attending school only sometimes. Attending schools with anti-LGBTQ+ policies was associated with poorer mental health and higher suicide risk among LGBTQ+ young people, with more policies correlating with worse mental health outcomes. Students cannot learn when they don't feel safe. All educators learn this in school when they study Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - psychological safety and belonging are keys to true learning. It is imperative that we protect students of all identities and backgrounds so they can show up as their authentic selves every day. #transkidsmatter #inclusionmatters #education

While eating disorders don’t discriminate and affect a percentage of the whole global population, there is a noticeable trend in the LGBTQ+ community. Studies show that this community are disproportionately affected by eating disorders, a trend that mirrors the increased risk of all mental health challenges. This raises important questions about the unique struggles LGBTQ+ individuals face in relation to body image and mental health. Several factors contribute to this increased risk, including societal pressures, stigma, and discrimination. Understanding these elements is important to offer better support and empathy towards those in the LGBTQ+ community who are struggling with these issues, and exploring the causes and effects can help us reach a deeper understanding and drive positive change. Unsurprisingly, anti-LGBTQ+ media has been linked to poorer mental health among LGBTQ+ young adults. Nowadays, it's pretty standard to see anti-LGBTQ+ media that range in severity—anywhere from verbal discrimination to harmful policies to outright physical violence. This increase in anti-LGBTQ+ media has not been accompanied by an increase in support for the community, making coping far more complex. Combating this mental health crisis will require not only more support but more tangible resources as well. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eb9t7_Qx #LGBTQ #LGBTQAdvocacy #LGBTQMentalHealth

According to The Trevor Project's 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, 39% of #LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting #suicide in the past year — including 46% of #transgender and #nonbinary young people. LGBTQ+ youth of color reported higher rates than White peers. Additionally, for the sixth year, the U.S. National Survey uncovered the reality that there is a significant association between anti-LGBTQ+ victimization and disproportionately high rates of suicide risk — and that far too many young people struggle to access the mental health care they need.
