Helping students and families control the college admissions process, instead of being controlled by it.
👀 Last week, the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee of the Connecticut General Assembly advanced Senate Bill 203 to the Senate floor. If passed, the bill will prohibit public and private institutions from giving preferential consideration to prospective students who have a familial relationship with an alumnus (legacy admissions) or donor during the admissions process. There have been similar bans on legacy admissions in Colorado and Virginia, but Connecticut would be the first state to extend this limit to private institutions. According to a 12/2023 report from Education Reform Now CT, legacy status is not being used at any of the state's 4-year public universities, including the University of Connecticut. It has also been removed from the decision process at several private schools, such as Wesleyan University, Quinnipiac University, the University of Hartford and the University of New Haven. However, there are still seven private institutions in Connecticut giving preference to legacy applicants, including Yale University, Connecticut College, Fairfield University and Trinity College-Hartford. According to Education Reform Now CT, national research shows legacy applicants to be more than three times as likely to be admitted as non-legacy peers. Legacy students are also more likely to be both wealthy and white than their peers. ➡ https://lnkd.in/g-SDqPd9 During the recent hearing, Yale's Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremiah Quinlan stated that 11-14% of admitted applicants are applicants. In pushing back against the bill, he said, “The vast majority of alumni of color are concerned that this preference which has been in place for a little bit over a hundred years and has primarily benefited white students will now be taken away at the moment that a more diverse group of alumni would have their sons and daughters be able to apply and get the legacy consideration.” ➡ https://lnkd.in/g4t2nvDu The broader legislature has until May to vote on this bill. ⬇ I help students & families control the college admissions process, instead of being controlled by it. 💻 Please visit my website or email me (rabcollegeconsulting@gmail.com) to schedule a free consultation. https://lnkd.in/eXi_h7nM #collegeadmissions #universityadmissions #collegecounseling #collegecounselor #collegeapplications #collegeapps #admissions #applicants #students #studentsuccess #highschool #highschoolstudents #parents #parentsupport #classof2025 #classof2026 #classof2027 #classof2028 #beprepared #organized #attentiontodetail #askquestions #askanexpert #legacyadmissions #donors #collegesanduniversities

The Division I Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a package of rules changes to allow transferring student-athletes who meet certain academic eligibility requirements to be immediately eligible at their new school, regardless of whether they transferred previously. The council’s action is not final until the meeting concludes Thursday and is subject to ratification by the Division I Board of Directors at its meeting later this month. If ratified, the rules would be effective immediately. #NCAAUpdates #StudentAthleteTransfers #ImmediateEligibility #DivisionIRules #CollegeAthletics #AcademicEligibility #AthleteMobility #NCAADecision #RuleChanges #AthleteRights #FairPlay

Helping students and families control the college admissions process, instead of being controlled by it.
In response to Tuesday's news from the U.S. Department of Education that it won’t transmit information from students who filled out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to colleges until the first half of March, incoming full-time first-year students to Oregon State University's Corvalis and Cascades campuses will extend its Advanced Tuition Deposit Deadline from May 1 to June 1. Future OSU students who have challenges that make a June 1 response unfeasible will be assisted on a case-by-case basis. https://lnkd.in/eBF-rg_p OSU is one of the first schools to make this change, but families should hope (expect?) to see this list grow quickly. As senior students and their families look to make their enrollment decisions (and younger students look to shape their college lists), they should note how much grace a school exhibits. Even if you are fortunate enough not to have to worry about financial aid, you should be concerned about how they treat your future classmates. - I help students & families control the college process, instead of being controlled by it. For me, the 2023 entry cycle marked a significant step forward in widening access and participation. For the first time, a range of cohorts – including young adult carers, estranged students, and service children – were able to flag their individual circumstances in the UCAS application. This not only enhances their visibility in the admissions process and the support they receive from universities, but it also transforms our understanding of their progression journeys. Today, UCAS has released new insights on the journey of young adult carers in the latest instalment of our ‘Next Steps series,’ telling the story of the first 19,000 students to flag their circumstances using this question. What we see is a cohort of students inspired to study courses that offer social benefit but need support to achieve their goals. However, we also find that over two-thirds are unaware of the support available. My hope is that every university outreach and widening access practitioner can pick up todays report and find at least one way to enhance their offer to young adult carers. These small changes would make a massive difference. A massive congratulations to Dr Holly Brown for delivering what I believe is a truly important piece of work. Helping students and families control the college admissions process, instead of being controlled by it.
Maryland Governor Gov. Wes Moore recently signed HB4, which bans admission preferences for relatives of alumni and donors at any of the state's public and private institution. Maryland becomes the third state, joining Colorado and Virginia, in prohibiting this practice. While The Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland haven't been using legacy preferences, schools including Bowie State University, Goucher College, Loyola University Maryland, Mount St. Mary's University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and the United States Naval Academy will need to make the change for the next application cycle. The state of Connecticut was expected to pass a similar bill, but lobbying from several private universities, including Yale University and Fairfield University, resulted in the state Senate weakening the legislation. The amended bill, which now heads to the Connecticut House of Representatives, mandates colleges either to indicate they don’t consider legacy status in admissions or report various admission and enrollment data, including the percentage of legacy students admitted along with data comparing the academic credentials of legacy admits to those of other students. University of Maryland associate professor Julie J. Park, who studies equity in college admissions, told the The Hechinger Report that legacy admission policies unfairly benefit applicants who already have advantages over their peers. https://lnkd.in/d4yiu-cy With bills ending legacy preferences presently being considered in California, New York, Massachusetts and Minnesota, Michael Nietzel is concerned that these states may end up having the same setback as Connecticut. Writing in Forbes, the president emeritus of Missouri State University said, "It (the amended Connecticut bill) represents a compromise that prevents any real change to the status quo, and it may become a strategy adopted in the future by legacy-preferring colleges to weaken or derail statutory bans in other states." https://lnkd.in/d_imRqme ⬇ 👨🎓 I help students & families control the college admissions process, instead of being controlled by it. 💻 Please visit my website and schedule a free consultation to learn more. https://lnkd.in/eXi_h7nM #collegeadmissions #collegeadmissionsconsulting #collegeadmissionscounseling #collegeapplications #collegesearch #collegelist #students #studentsuccess #classof2025 #classof2026 #classof2027 #classof2028 #parents #parentsupport #collegesanduniversities #legacyadmissions #equity #diversityequityinclusion
