Today is #WorldBloodDonorDay, where we raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products. The 14th June 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, and this year’s theme is focusing on thanking the millions of voluntary blood donors across the world. At CCI, we deeply understand the life-saving impact of blood donations, particularly in the resource-poor areas in which we operate. One of our previous initiatives included working with the Malian National Blood Bank to organise the largest blood drive in Malian history, combined with an occupational health HIV, hepatitis B&C and syphilis screening for our client. Mali suffers a national shortage of blood, and hospitals often have to rely on family donating at the time of need for critically ill patients - such as victims of road traffic accidents, or post-partum haemorrhage – which is not always possible. Over just 3 days, the Malian National Blood Bank received 151 units of blood from donors, which was the equivalent of 10 days of donations at the usual rate. The donors benefitted from knowing their HIV/ hepatitis/syphilis status and accessing treatment if needed. So, wherever you are in the world, consider booking a blood donation today – just 20 minutes of your time could save the lives of up to three people. #WBDD #WorldBloodDonorDay #GiveBlood #RemoteHealth #CriticalCare

🌎 World AIDS Day 2023 Today marks #WorldAIDSDay, a poignant occasion annually dedicated to remembering the countless lives lost to the HIV epidemic. It's a day when we proudly don the red ribbon, standing in unity to commemorate those who are no longer with us. Beyond remembering, World AIDS Day serves as a moment of celebration for the developments made in combatting HIV. It's an opportunity to envision a future free from new HIV cases, striving for the ambitious goal: eradicating new transmissions by 2030. Despite this amazing progress, the persisting stigma around HIV remains a formidable obstacle. Shockingly, 3 out of 4 individuals with HIV face discrimination, impacting various facets of their lives - from healthcare and social circles to workplaces. The stigma of HIV is more harmful than HIV itself. To overcome the epidemic and prevent new HIV cases, smashing stigma and dispelling outdated misconceptions about HIV are crucial. Yet, this task takes a collective effort — it can't be achieved by charities and professional bodies alone. We need wider communities and societies to help smash the stigma! I am proud to volunteer with Waverley Care, a Scottish charity leading the charge in advocating for this cause in Scotland. ❤️ Read more below about their incredible work! You can also donate to the charity here to support their efforts: https://lnkd.in/e_iVeayS #GetToZero #smashthestigma #uequalsu #hiv #hivprevention #community #charity #worldaidsdays2023 https://lnkd.in/e5nfz7Qw

Today is World AIDS Day 1st Dec 2023 This is the 35th anniversary of #WAD Since the beginning of the epidemic 85.6 million people have been infected with the HIV virus and about 40.4 million people have died of HIV. In 2019 it was estimated that 105,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. Whilst any loss of life is tragic, HIV mortality is six times higher than that of COVID with 6,961,041 deaths globally. It took 16 years to develop the first effective combination therapy to treat HIV, at that time it involved multiple pills at regular times each day. Now it’s just one or two pills a day. 31% of those receiving treatment for HIV in 2021 were female. The numbers of people being diagnosed with HIV in later life continues to grow, in 2021 21% of new diagnoses were in people over the age of 50. https://lnkd.in/ektYR4Su 33 A&E departments across NHS England with high prevalence populations are now screening for Hep B, Hep C and HIV on patient admission unless the patient opts out. A significant increase in detection and re-engaging those who were previously lost to treatment. NHS England » Thousands of new HIV and Hepatitis cases identified thanks to NHS testing pilot #trusts

In 2022, Canadian blood suppliers moved from time-based deferral to individual risk-based donor assessment for MSM. Early reports indicate no statistically significant change in HIV rates following the change, which is not surprising. The bigger issue here is how does the blood banking community now reach out to those donors who were deferred, or who had given up on blood donation altogether, under the time-based assessments?

If you live in a high-income country, even a single new child HIV infection is a mark of failure. In other parts of the world, it can still be a death sentence. But we now have the testing, treatment, and prevention tools to prevent these deaths: 🌟safe and highly effective drugs for treatment and prevention 🌟infant preventive drugs and same-day testing 🌟Strawberry-flavored drugs that are dissolved in water and self-testing options And, as we heard during the DTG Story session at #AIDS2024, pediatric DTG provided many lessons to countries, manufacturers, donors, and NGOs like CHAI to apply to new product introduction moving forward. Lessons we are already applying, as CHAI's Melynda Watkins, Senior Director, Product Development and Regulatory Affairs, updated the conference at the New Horizons session. With Unitaid funding, CHAI partnered with Laurus Labs Limited to develop and register a best-in-class second-line treatment for children, DRV/r, which was filed for US FDA review in June and is expected to receive approval before the end of the year. This is a game-changer. Yet despite progress made in reducing HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths among children, a new report released this week by the #GlobalAllianceEndingAIDS in Children by 2030 shows that an urgent scale up of HIV services in countries worst affected by the pandemic is required to end AIDS by 2030. Now is the time to invest in the tools countries need to stop the tens of thousands of deaths happening each year. USAID's Christine Malati called the global community to action at the close of the New Horizons session: "We have the tools. There is no excuse." #PutPeopleFirst #PutChildrenFirst International AIDS Society The ELMA Philanthropies UNICEF

🌍 World AIDS Day: Let Communities Lead As we commemorate World AIDS Day, we're inspired by the theme: Let Communities Lead. At immaculate, we are inspired by global efforts to raise awareness, eradicate stigma, and empower communities and people living with HIV and AIDS. We’re proud to have worked on projects that have done all the above, bringing together the fantastic work of the community, organisations, and charities, together with healthcare organisations and pharmaceutical companies. The community launched the campaign Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) to help pave the way to understanding. Undetectable viral loads mean untransmittable HIV, meaning individuals with HIV adhering to effective treatment can't sexually transmit the virus. Communities are the heart of progress. By amplifying voices, fostering education, and promoting inclusivity, we pave the road toward eradicating stigma and discrimination against those affected by HIV and AIDS, and help bring an end to this global pandemic. Join us in honouring World AIDS Day. Together, let's lead towards a future free of stigma and full of support. ❤️ #WorldAIDSDay #LetCommunitiesLead #U=U #RockTheRibbon

Today is World AIDS Day 🩸 and at nisria we at service to many children and young-adults who are affected and struggling with the stigma of being +ve. For our community and little warriors here are some facts and figures about children living with AIDS/HIV. Many of those facts are actually +ve! * 16.5 million children worldwide have lost their mother, father or both parents due to HIV / AIDS. * Around 13.7 million AIDS orphans live in sub-Saharan Africa alone. But AIDS is also taking over more and more children from parents in Asia and Eastern Europe. * An estimated 2.1 million children are HIV-infected, with around 1.85 million living in sub-Saharan Africa. * In 2016, around 137,000 girls and boys (under the age of 15) were infected with the deadly HIV virus. Thus, the number of new infections compared to previous years has continued to fall - a development that makes hope. * Most children become infected with HIV through mother-to-child transmission , ie during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. * Significant progress has recently been made in the treatment of expectant mothers: in 2016, more than two-thirds of HIV-positive pregnant women worldwide received antiretroviral prophylaxis or medication. In the period from 2014 to 2016, 790,000 girls and boys were prevented from becoming infected. Since 1988, communities have stood together on World AIDS Day to show strength and solidarity against the stigma of both HIV and AIDS and to remember lives lost. The red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for people living with HIV. In the UK, more than 105,000 people are living with HIV. Globally, an estimated 38 million people live with the virus. AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body's immune system is badly damaged because of the virus. More than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS related illnesses over the past 40 years, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history - but it continues to be highly stigmatised and misunderstood. We have come so far from a medical perspective however we must end the stigma! By donating to the National AIDS Trust, we can help stop injustices by changing policies and practices which discriminate against people living with HIV. It will help end new cases of the infection and create a fairer society for people living with it. You can donate here: https://lnkd.in/eQeS-3q7 #rocktheribbon #worldaidsday

Expanding access to #PrEP and other prevention tools, along with increasing treatment coverage and viral load suppression, is crucial in preventing new infections and breaking the cycle of transmission. The #PrEP ring is designed to help reduce women’s likelihood of acquiring HIV during vaginal sex. The Global Fund Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) UNAIDS #UPROOT #HIV #AIDS2024
Just Announced at #AIDS2024: The Global Fund in partnership with the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) announce a US$2 million initiative for the purchase of 150,000 dapivirine vaginal rings in countries where the Global Fund invests to fight HIV and AIDS. The rings are a long-acting HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option for women. “In many areas of the world, the rate of new HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women is more than three times the rate among adolescent boys and young men… Girls and women have spoken up that they want the PrEP ring, and today’s announcement is one more steppingstone in a series of innovative approaches to give it to them.” – Peter Sands, Executive Director https://lnkd.in/e7rFdZdi
