It is with deep concern that we share news of the recent harassment faced by seaweed farmers in Sitio Marihangin Island, Philippines. These farmers, peacefully tending to their livelihoods, have been threatened and intimidated by masked, armed individuals purportedly linked to the development plans of San Miguel Corporation for a white beach resort. This incident is not an isolated one; it reflects a broader pattern where communities across the globe, particularly those residing on ancestral lands, are unjustly displaced in the name of development projects. The International Land Coalition (ILC) strongly condemns such actions. We stand in unwavering solidarity with the seaweed farmers of Sitio Marihangin Island and affirm their rights to their ancestral lands, livelihoods, and cultural heritage. The forced eviction and harassment of these communities are clear violations of human rights and international norms. ILC calls upon all stakeholders, including governments and corporations, to respect the rights of indigenous and local communities and to prioritize sustainable and inclusive development that does not come at the expense of vulnerable populations. We urge swift action to investigate and address this incident, ensure the safety and security of affected communities, and uphold justice and accountability for those responsible. Meet Mesaid Rashid Salim, one of our coastal region operators, empowered with knowledge and skills from the WaterKiosk academy. Mesaid operates from Mtongwe WaterKiosk and she can troubleshoot any issue arising from the system. As an operator, her role doesn’t end by just producing and dispensing water but also she sensitizes people on the advantages of taking hygiene drinking water. The area is inhibited with a huge number of lower class people doing menial jobs and water in that region is quite a challenge. In Vietnam, the Aqua industry is always the last choice of young generations because of the pressures, challenges and difficulties of this industry bring to them. About 80-90% of young people in families working in the seafood industry will choose to work at companies in big cities or study abroad to settle permanently or develop a non-fishery business. However, for this particular Cargill customer, he chose the exact opposite of the majority as he is decided to back home and to continue build on his father's shrimp feed business after completed college in aquaculture. With the knowledge, experience and skills of the younger generation, I believe he can develop well and contribute a small part to the development of Vietnam's fisheries industry.
