CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program gears up for two critical brake safety campaigns in 2024, aiming to enhance commercial motor vehicle safety across North America. Scheduled for August 25-31, 2024, Brake Safety Week will see intensive brake system inspections, primarily Level IV Inspections, on large trucks and buses. Additionally, there will be an unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement initiative, which may be held at any time. The significance of properly functioning brake systems cannot be overstated, as they are paramount to safe commercial vehicle operation. Brake-related violations rank highest among out-of-service violations during roadside inspections. This shows how crucial it is to check and look after brakes carefully. If brakes aren't put in right or looked after properly, they might not be able to stop the vehicle when needed, which can put both drivers and the public at risk by making it harder to stop in emergencies. As we approach FMCSA Brake Safety Week, it's a timely reminder of the critical role that effective brake inspections play in ensuring the safety of both our drivers and the public. Brake systems are among the most essential components of any commercial vehicle, and their proper maintenance cannot be overstated. During Brake Safety Week, enforcement officials will be conducting inspections across the country, focusing on identifying and removing unsafe commercial vehicles from the road. The goal is to reduce the number of accidents caused by faulty brakes, but it’s important to remember that safety starts with each of us. An effective brake inspection should be an integral part of your trip inspection routine. Remember to check for: - Brake Pad Wear - Air Brake System Integrity - Brake Drums and Rotors - Brake Adjustment - Warning Devices Remember, a thorough brake inspection is not just about passing an inspection during Brake Safety Week—it’s about protecting your life and the lives of others on the road. Take the time to do it right, every time. #BrakeSafetyWeek #SafetyFirst

🚨 CVSA Roadcheck 2024 Alert: May 14th - May 16th 🚨 Attention all transportation professionals! The Commercial Vehicle Safety Administration (CVSA) has announced that the annual Roadcheck will take place from May 14th to May 16th, 2024. During these three days, enforcement officials will conduct an increased number of inspections on commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards. This year, the focus will be on two important priorities: tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession. Please ensure that all tractor protection systems are in proper working condition and strictly adhere to alcohol and controlled substance regulations during this period. During the inspection of tractor protection system components, the inspector will: 1) Ensure the wheel chocks are still in place and have the driver release all the brakes by pressing dash valves; 2) Have the driver carefully remove the gladhands and allow air to escape; 3) Ensure the air stops leaking from the supply line with at least 20 psi remaining; 4) Listen and/or feel for any leaking air at the gladhand couplers on the trailer; 5) Request a full service brake application by the driver; 6) Listen and/or feel for leaks from both air lines. #CVSARoadcheck2024 #TransportationSafety #Compliance

The following incident demonstrates the importance of effective trailer hitch inspection and maintenance regimes. During heavy vehicle transit, a tri axle tag trailer carrying a padfoot road roller detached from a truck on a highway, travelled 153 metres into the opposite lane and struck a guard rail before stopping. This was caused by significant wear on the main hitch nut thread, which led to the trailer detaching from the truck. Original material courtesy of Safer Together (Australia). Are you fully equipped for the road ahead? Having the right safety equipment can mean the difference between a safe journey and an unexpected emergency. Here’s a closer look at the essential safety gear every truck driver should carry: 🔥 Fire Extinguisher - A certified fire extinguisher is crucial for addressing unexpected fires, whether it’s an engine malfunction or a small electrical issue. Ensure it’s easily accessible and regularly inspected to keep it in top condition. 🚑 First-Aid Kit - Make sure your kit includes bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, and pain relievers to manage any injuries that may arise during your journey. ⚠️ Warning Triangles or Road Flares - In case of an emergency, reflective warning triangles or road flares alert other drivers to your presence, helping to prevent further accidents.. 🦺 High-Visibility Vest - A high-visibility vest is essential when you need to exit your vehicle on busy roads. It significantly increases your visibility, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring that other drivers can see you clearly. 🛠️ Tire Pressure Gauge - Proper tire pressure is vital for safe driving. An underinflated tire can lead to blowouts and poor handling. On June 10, CVSA announced the results of its Brake Safety Day campaign. Out of 4,898 vehicles checked throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, inspectors placed 570 out of service. Violations included worn brake lines/hoses, broken brake drums, inoperative tractor protection system, inoperative low-air warning device, and air and hydraulic fluid leaks. Don't leave safety to chance. A quick and thorough #DOT #pretripinspection is your first line of defense, ensuring a smooth journey and compliance with regulations. In just 15 minutes, you can identify potential issues and avoid roadside delays. Here's your pre-trip checklist breakdown: 🧐 Lights & Reflectors: Circle the vehicle, checking all lights, turn signals, and hazard lights for proper function. Ensure reflectors are clean and undamaged. 🧐 Tires & Wheels: Inspect each tire for proper inflation, wear, and any cuts or bulges. Check lug nut tightness and wheel integrity. 🧐 Brakes: Test both air brakes and parking brakes for smooth operation and proper pressure. Look for leaks in the air lines. 🧐 Fluids & Leaks: Check engine oil, coolant, and other fluids for proper levels and any leaks under the vehicle. 🧐 Exterior & Interior: Look for loose parts, damage to mirrors, doors, and cargo securement. Ensure wipers, mirrors, and horn function correctly. 🧐 Paperwork: Have your driver's license, registration, vehicle inspection report, and bills of lading readily available. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Brake Safety Week is coming at the end of this month, but fleets can prepare for this inspection event by focusing on pre- and post-trip inspections. One thing to look out for is rubbing air lines. “Those [rubbing air lines] get written up a lot,” said James Ward, senior safety manager at Transervice Logistics Inc. “If you have two brake lines—which some of them are rubber, others are like a poly material—what happens is those two hoses have a lot of pressure going through them, and they're sitting right next to each other. So over time, with the vibration of the truck, they tend to rub against each other, and they can start leaving little marks on each other. Sometimes they'll wear down far enough to actually put a big chafe into the hose." For more tips on how to prepare, see below. #safety #truckingindustry #brakesafetyweek #fleetmaintenance

Let's talk about spotting sleepyheads behind the wheel. We all know the dangers of drunk driving, so be on the lookout for swerving, tailgating, and sudden braking. If you see this, pull over safely and call the authorities. Here’s what the CVSA will be focusing on during the Roadcheck: Tractor Protection Systems – These systems are crucial for your safety on the road. Make sure they are functioning properly to avoid any potential hazards. Alcohol and Controlled Substance Possession – Inspectors will be checking for any signs of impairment due to alcohol or controlled substances. Ensure you and your crew are fully compliant with regulations. Trailer air supply valve – This valve is like a light switch for your trailer brakes. To test it, disconnect the gladhands (those yellow connectors) at the front of the trailer, then hit the brakes. If no air leaks, you're golden! Roadcheck ready – Inspectors will check everything from your brakes to your paperwork. Remember, they're looking for safe rigs and alert drivers. Remember, BXB drivers: safety first, always! Keep those sharp eyes on the road, take breaks to stay fresh, and follow the rules. Let's show everyone how BXB Express Freight rolls – safe, professional, and ready to conquer any road! #BXBExpress #RoadSafety #CVSARoadcheck #DriveSafe #TruckingSafety #StayAlert #FreightForward #TruckingTips #SafeDriving
