The neighborhoods of South Park and Georgetown border Seattle’s only river—the Duwamish. Due to the ongoing effects of many environmental and social injustices, in these areas, community members have a life expectancy 13 years shorter than people living in Seattle’s wealthier neighborhoods. As an early step in this effort, a team of researchers from the University of Washington School of Public Health and the Duwamish Valley Youth Corps surveyed Duwamish Valley households to find out what the community needs to prepare for, adapt to, and respond to the impacts of climate change. The project and StoryMap found that community members prioritize environmental health, which includes the need for more green space and inclusion of community perspectives in the work to build climate resilience. https://lnkd.in/gr4PzsZx #PublicHealth #ClimateHealth #ClimateResilience #CommunityHealth

NEW PUBLICATION: NCHH created this tool for technical assistance, "Using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funding to Improve Indoor Air Quality," to support local and state leaders (e.g., governments, agencies, programs, advocates, et cetera) in understanding how CDBG funding can be used to accomplish housing repairs designed to create healthier, safer indoor environments. We use indoor air quality (IAQ) as an example of a housing-based environmental subject that CDBG funding can help to address throughout this brief, but the background and strategies could be applied across a range of housing health and safety hazards depending on your community priorities. We present opportunities, real-world examples, and discussion points to help communities consider how their CDBG programs can integrate priority IAQ solutions. It starts with Co! People have been all but removed from conventional property creating, whether that’s buy to let, HMO’s, new build. Whatever it is, the tenant or buyer just isn’t asked. Even those who live in the same neighbourhood aren’t asked. For some people that’s ok, they just get on with it. For us, we’ve built a business around doing the opposite. Co for us is all about community. If you want to live in one, and make choices along the way about where, what type of property, how it looks, what amenity spaces it has, how you live your life there, then you should know all of that is now available. Not just by us either. It’s potential the biggest shift in how we create and own housing. It’s not for everyone, and that’s ok. But you have to start somewhere. 👇
