How do child welfare agency leaders view economic need and child welfare system involvement? How do they coordinate with other human service systems to offer economic and concrete supports such as food, stable #Housing, and #ChildCare? Chapin Hall teamed up with APHSA -- American Public Human Services Association to answer these questions. We conducted a national landscape survey of child welfare leaders to learn how they perceive support options, service coordination and tracking, funding, and barriers to meeting families’ needs. Great insights in this report on factors in child welfare intervention volumes! The Chapin Hall survey highlights an understanding of the relationship between access to economic and concrete supports and child welfare involvement. There needs to be shared responsibility across programs to get upstream and provide the services needed to prevent child welfare involvement. "RECOMMENDATIONS: Economic and concrete supports are essential for preventing child maltreatment and child welfare involvement, and for promoting family stability and well-being. Child welfare agencies face many challenges and barriers in providing access to these supports; they prefer to shift the primary role to other human service systems and community-based providers. To do so, policy and fiscal reforms are needed to increase direct and flexible funding, as are changes to policies and practices that contribute to unnecessary child welfare system involvement."

The child welfare workforce plays a critical role in helping families thrive and stay safely together. But the ongoing practice (with feedback) that is essential to family engagement skills is rarely feasible in the field. This new brief from our research partners Mathematica, the Center for the Study of Social Policy, and the UNC School of Social Work summarizes emerging data practices that may help advance equity in child welfare. The project team identified emerging data practices by conducting an environmental scan of academic literature, policy documents, and other relevant sources.
