Data Privacy Matters, say it again. 23andMe was valued at $3.5 billion when it went public in 2021; now, its market value sits around $173 million. Earlier this week, the company settled for $30 million with victims of last year's massive data breach. https://lnkd.in/ez2bDrTH #PrivacyMatters #Databreach #Privacy

So many lessons to learn here. To name a few: ⭐ Companies: Privacy matters. Especially when you are talking about consumer data, especially especially when you are talking about third-party consumer data (data viewable in others' contact lists or profiles), especially especially especially when you are dealing in highly sensitive data. To this day, I still come across companies that think privacy is a joke. Privacy matters. It could literally make or break your company. ⭐ VCs and private equity investors: Privacy matters. What stood out to me most about this article is that $1.4 *billion* dollars was invested into 23andMe before this incident. This is a truly egregious lack of due diligence by investors. She who holds the purse strings holds the most power––investment firms: understand that you are the most powerful change agent for most companies. Do your diligence to protect your investments, and also realize this is a larger responsibility to society. ⭐ Consumers: Privacy matters. Learn about your privacy rights and engage with companies that collect data in a more intentional way. While I personally am too paranoid to engage in consumer genetic testing, members of my family did and submitted data deletion requests immediately afterward. Consider your harm reduction options as a consumer. #privacy #dataprivacyweek #dataprivacymatters

What a day here at #Legalweek24 – this morning Jonathan Rubinsztein Stephen L. Stewart and I shared a sneak peek of Nuix's latest innovation in the world of legal technology. I can’t wait to share more about this with you – Watch this space! This afternoon I moderated a panel discussion on litigation trends in data security, data privacy, and cybersecurity with: Patrick E. Zeller, FIP, Amgen, Joe Martinez, Complete Legal, Melissa Ventrone, Clark Hill, and Caroline Sweeney, Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Three key takeaways I got from this discussion were: 🔷 The absence of a federal GDPR equivalent has led to varying state regulations addressing privacy and cybersecurity concerns. 🔷 The new SEC cybersecurity disclosure rules lack a clear definition of what constitutes a material risk, creating ambiguity in interpretation. 🔷 The rise in lawsuits related to generative AI underscores the challenges US copyright laws face in addressing privacy, consumer safety, and intellectual property issues. If you are interested in learning more about litigation trends in data security and privacy reach out directly, I’d be happy to continue the conversation. #legaltech #discovernewatnuix #nuix #datasecurity #dataprivacy #cybersecurity #litigation #legalweek24
