In late December, Susan Cox-Smith and I had the pleasure of joining UNDP's Futures Series to talk about obstacles and building blocks for an enduring future culture. One of the most important early building blocks is enabling a culture that tolerates, or even embraces, uncertainty. This often has to be signalled from the top, as I talk about in the clip below. 🌐Polarization and distrust are on a collision course with an ailing planet. UNDP’s 2024 Human Development Report reminds that polarization is more likely to self-destruct badly than to self-correct helpfully. 🌎 This means we need an approach with steady positive pressure that encourages #empathy, builds interpersonal #trust and emphasizes overlapping, #sharedidentities. 💡 Many of us within and outside the United Nations have been experimenting ways to reflect the interdependence between people and planet in how we work. This puts a primacy on #mindset shift, #relationship, and meaningful #dialogue as a force for reconnection. 📍 As part of the #SummitoftheFuture official program, we’re bringing together several strands of work and expert networks led by United Nations entities for transformative spaces. ⚡ Part of the UN 2.0 | United Nations ambition, with three principles in mind: 🔹 People-centred: placing ultimate objectives in terms of human development and human security. 🔹 Co-owned: with fair distribution of the power to set collective goals, the responsibilities to pursue them and the resulting outcomes. 🔹 Future-oriented: focused on what we can shape and create if we work together, enriching the space for deliberation and agreement. 👉 If you’re in New York, please join us (in person only) 🗓 19 September 9.30am EST register here: bit.ly/4e4BHKZ Haoliang Xu Marcos Neto Kersten Jauer Ayaka Suzuki Tanya Accone Henan Cheng Pedro Conceição Eric Martin Liliana Uruburo Nina Grinman Gabriel Tuan

Addressing our global challenges requires changing the mindsets and behaviours that originally caused them. In 2015, all United Nations members agreed on 17 goals to build a world of peace, dignity, and prosperity on a healthy planet by 2030—the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Having now passed the halfway point to the deadline, the unfortunate reality is that progress has so far been disappointing and is still far off track. The SDGs provide a tangible roadmap, but a crucial question arises: Do humans currently possess the skills and capacities to navigate this intricate and interconnected landscape of challenges? While the world often focuses on technical solutions, the importance of inner development—building the skills and capacities within us—remains largely overlooked, yet it is essential for a sustainable future. To understand what these inner skills are, the Inner Development Goals are convening a global conversation to create a shared language around our potential to drive the change we need. Curious? 🗣️ Join the conversation and contribute your wisdom to the co-created IDG Framework. 🔗 Link in comments! #IDGs #InnerDevelopmentGoals #IDGSurvey #Cocreation #IDGFramework

Standing at the UN podium is a moment I’ll never forget. I spoke about the slow progress on the SDGs under Agenda 2030. I proudly represented AIESEC & Pakistan at the Asia Pacific Summit. We tackled how SDG 1 affects developing countries. The side events I attended highlighted global efforts in action. Economic and social issues took center stage in the discussions. Climate change initiatives were a major focus. Networking with passionate individuals inspired me. I left feeling more motivated to make a bigger impact. My speech was even featured on UN Web TV. This exposure gave me fresh perspectives. It showed me how much work we still need to do. Working together is essential to achieving these goals. Seeing global commitment up close was eye-opening. It reinforced my belief in the power of collective action. Each conversation added something new to my understanding. Overall, this experience shifted my perspective. P.S. What’s your take on speeding up SDG progress? —— ♻️ Repost to share with your network. If you enjoyed reading this, follow Abdul Wasay for more.

In uncertainty lies the power to influence the future. But, how? In a world mired in complex challenges and deep divisions, the #collectiveaction needed to influence the future is gridlocked – exactly when we need it most. The risk is that we surrender hope - and with it our power – to act for the fair and flourishing futures we know are possible. How do we find ways out? We’ve built a practice over the last few years premised on awareness-based systems change – as a foundation to achieving the #SDGs. I’m happy to share the outline of one our first conversations in 2024 in systems leadership spaces for young UN staff. This year we’re teaming up with two powerful forces: UN leaders advancing the Secretary General’s UN 2.0 | United Nations vision, and UNDP's 2024 Human Development Report (forthcoming) - so we can be more effective contributors of systems change. I’m equally excited to launch our next phase of #SDG Push, leveraging data innovation, systems and futures approaches – and combining our focus on digital with social technologies. We’ll share more in the weeks ahead – and hope to connect with many of you in spaces of purpose, possibility and progress. I completely agree that addressing our global challenges requires changing #mindsets and behaviors. The Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations) provide a roadmap, but it's crucial to develop the inner skills and capacities within us to navigate this intricate landscape of challenges. Will you join me and others in the conversation and contribute wisdom to the co-created IDG Framework?
