Congratulations to Elias R. Ruiz-Morales, PhD Student at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, who has been awarded a prestigious IBSA Foundation for scientific research Fellowship! 🎉 He won the Fellowship to investigate how the human placenta responds to malaria infection. 🧬🦟 The international award from the IBSA Foundation, based in Switzerland, is designed to support talented young researchers in projects that could change the future of medicine. Elias was one of 248 applicants to the scheme from 47 countries. Elias said: “Institutions like the IBSA Foundation play a crucial role in shaping the future of science by supporting early-career researchers. These fellowships not only back innovative research that aim to have a positive impact in society, but also help researchers like me to build our careers.” “My project investigates how infections impact the placenta and cause pregnancy complications. These infections can lead to miscarriages and developmental conditions, and are a major global health problem that affect millions of people around the world.” Find out more at https://lnkd.in/enwVEMSD

Title: $1 Billion Donation to Albert Einstein's College of Medicine - A Transformative Gift On July 13th, 2024, the Albert Einstein's College of Medicine announced a historic $1 billion donation from philanthropist Ruth Gottesman. This transformative gift is the largest single donation ever received by the institution and will have a profound impact on its ability to advance medical research, education, and patient care. The donation from Ms. Gottesman, a longtime supporter of the college, will fund critical initiatives across the institution, including: - Establishing new research centers and laboratories to drive breakthroughs in fields like cancer, neuroscience, and infectious disease - Expanding scholarship programs to attract and support the next generation of medical leaders and innovators - Upgrading campus facilities and infrastructure to provide state-of-the-art resources for students, faculty, and researchers "This historic gift from Ruth Gottesman will propel Einstein to new heights, allowing us to accelerate discoveries, train the physicians and scientists of tomorrow, and deliver the highest quality care to our patients," said Dr. Gordon Tomaselli, Dean of the Albert Einstein's College of Medicine. "We are deeply grateful for her visionary philanthropy and steadfast commitment to our mission." This donation serves as an inspiring example of the impact that philanthropic giving can have on advancing medical knowledge and improving lives. We call on other African and Nigerian billionaires to follow in Ms. Gottesman's footsteps and consider making transformative investments in medical research and education institutions across the continent. Your support can help unlock new breakthroughs, train the next generation of healthcare leaders, and ultimately, save and improve millions of lives. video credit: abc world news #MedicalResearch #MedicalEducation #PhilanthropicImpact #AfricanBillionaires #NigerianBillionaires #TransformativeGift #MedicalBreakthroughs #HealthcareLeaders #SaveLives #ImproveLives #AlbertEinsteinCollege #MedicalPhilanthropy

Hello Everyone, I am hosting Today a Walk and Roll for National Ataxia Foundation at Virginia Tech but I am also requesting for Virtual walks in virgins. It was initiated as First Walk and Roll for Virginia Tech but it later expanded to Northern Virginia and to colleagues residing in other states. It is to celebrate my daughter’s graduation at Tech who worked hard through her 4 years to improve accessibility within the university. There are some changes but still there are delays in execution due to funding. This Walk and Roll is second one in Virginia and first one in NOVA and Blacksburg. What is Walk and Roll - It is to for those who cannot walk any more and who became wheel chair bound to Roll while Friends and Family Walk with them. What is Ataxia - It is inability to Walk and a disjunction between a thought and walk. There are several underlying causes and mostly genetic conditions. What am I going to achieve - 1. To bring awareness in the public to understand, respect and support those who are unable to walk. 2. More research and funding to go for genetic studies through these National Foundations. 3. We are looking for more research and nutrition based programs identifying the elimination of toxicity through food specific to the condition. Believe it or not US has severally fallen behind that. 3. I am also primarily focusing on Accesibility improvements in and around schools. We started our fight at Virginia Tech and later after seeing our walk posts couple more came forward for difficulties with accessibility’s at schools and colleges. After this, I appreciate you all to joining me for a cause to sign the petition to improve accessibility’s for all doors starting at VT with a hope it expand to other colleges and universities. Please help me starting with this Walk and Roll on Sunday April 28, Sunday at 4pm for 2 miles. If you got chance to do so please send me a picture and a short video. A picture would be enough. https://lnkd.in/e9ZFbmXi Thank You 🙏

Dr. Kimberly Kwei hopes that if we can understand what mechanisms cause freeze of gait (FOG), we can begin developing treatments or therapies to minimize or eliminate its effects, not only for patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), but for gait dysfunction in other neurodegenerative disorders as well. Funding from the Karen Toffler Charitable Trust will enable Dr. Kwei to hire a research assistant, recruit participants for her study, purchase critical equipment, and so much more. Without this funding, Dr. Kwei would not be able to pursue this early phase of her research. This phase in her research will establish a foundation for what she ultimately hopes to achieve: develop a quantifiable and measurable understanding of how FOG manifests across all diseases in order to facilitate earlier and more accurate diagnosis as well as effective treatments and therapies. #TofflerScholar #Research
