Only one week to go until the BTS Monothematic Meeting 2024! We are looking forward to hearing talks on ageing and transplantation, particularly from researchers previously supported by QUOD: “Biomarkers to assess biological age in transplantation” Menna Clatworthy, University of Cambridge “Interventions to modify the older deceased donor: horizon scanning” Sofia Ferreira, The University of Edinburgh “Technological approaches to the older deceased donor: how will machine perfusion help us?” Annemarie Weißenbacher, Medizinische Universität Innsbruck #transplantation #ageing #OrganDonation

Looking back at last week's #TTS2024 and spotlighting the e-poster by Hussain Abbas from the Transplant Research Group at the University of Oxford. QUOD supplied samples from >1,000 liver donors for this study, which revealed differences between DBD and DCD donors and highlighted the under-utilisation of DCD livers as well as preretrieval biochemical and metabolic derangements that contribute to the risk factors associated with DCD livers. Following the success of Orgtober's trial launch last year, we’re thrilled to announce that 2024 will feature another full month dedicated to promoting children’s organ donation and health education all across Canada and the United Kingdom. HOW ORGTOBER AIMS TO CREATE CHANGE More time to talk! A month-long focus on organ donation, as proposed by Orgtober, provides ample time for teachers to prepare and plan educational activities. This extended period allows for a deeper exploration of the topic, including events, activities, and discussions. It ensures that students have the time and space to fully understand the importance of organ donation and to consider it thoughtfully. By giving this topic more time in the school curriculum, the campaign aims to foster a more informed and compassionate generation, ready to discuss and make decisions about organ donation. More schools! The Orgtober campaign aims to disrupt behaviour and increase education and awareness by getting more schools involved, starting with all primary schools. The greater the number of schools, the greater the number of students and families impacted, leading to a greater potential number of conversations and subsequent lives saved! More of what matters! By focusing on the fact that we’re all the same inside, and that it’s what’s on the inside that truly counts, schools will also help to promote diversity and inclusion as well as organ donation education. By presenting organ donation as an option for everyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or other personal characteristics, schools can help to break down barriers and encourage more people from diverse backgrounds to consider becoming organ donors. By addressing any specific concerns or misunderstandings that may be more prevalent in certain communities, schools can help to create a more inclusive and representative organ donor pool. More impact! Introducing the values that underpin organ donation at a younger age can have a positive impact on a larger audience, not just the students but also their teachers, parents and healthcare professionals. A month-long campaign also provides more time for measurable participation and data analysis, leading to more impact and influence. More visibility! Organ donation competes for public attention against thousands of other causes throughout the year. To increase its visibility, Orgtober will have significant resources to encourage community participation and share the largest collection of free education resources and mainstream products. This will create more opportunities for the campaign to be featured in mainstream media, providing a greater platform for organ donation awareness. #orgamites #mightyorgans #organdonationeducation #orgtober #orggandonation
