A philanthropic legacy project in retirement focused on a circular economy. Mend It, Australia is a repair advocate and networker for Australia. It also advocates for Australian right to repair legislation.
MiA are not known activisit for WtE technology but we attempt to follow what's happening and try to keep informed. MiA is not supportive of this technology, as it requires a contracted amount of rubbish to feed the plants. And, for all the reasons given and more, this technology is not the CE that we advocate for. Are we living in a CE bubble with all this happening around us that's not the long-term solution, right? "According to Hume City Council’s Waste and Recovery Strategy 2022-2023 report, in 2021 the council collected 9,264 tonnes of rubbish that ended up in a landfill. A figure well short of the proposed waste-to-energy plant’s capacity of 300,000 tonnes. Geelong Sustainability has “deep concerns” about waste-to-energy technology and regulations. “While we appreciate the efforts to manage waste responsibly and transition to a circular economy, we are fundamentally opposed to the implementation of waste-to-energy schemes for several reasons,” states the award-winning organisation’s chair David Spear in an letter to the State government posted 10 January 2024. David Spear. “Despite the intention to strike a balance between industry investment and waste management, we firmly believe that waste-to-energy is not the solution,” he said. “Incineration, as the chosen method for waste-to-energy production, poses grave environmental and health risks, contradicting the government’s pursuit of sustainable practices. “Waste-to-energy undermines the circular economy and resource conservation. Burning waste exacerbates pollution and depletes finite resources while destroying embedded energy. “This approach directly stifles innovation, contradicts efforts to improve recycling, and entrenches a linear economy detrimental to our long-term sustainability goals.” If all goes to plan, Hi-Quality expects to have its waste-to-energy plant fully operational in 2031, and predicts it will lead to an extra 800 truck movements in and out of the site every day." Really looking forward to this event Infrastructure New Zealand! Recycling our Infrastructure Assets to Catalyse Growth ♻️✨ Aotearoa New Zealand’s persistent underinvestment in #infrastructure has become a major long-term challenge for our economy and productivity. Our infrastructure assets were valued at $287 billion in 2022, but over the last 30 years renewal investment in these assets has not kept pace with depreciation. This means as well as building new infrastructure to support a growing population, we face a bow wave of asset renewal for existing assets that are increasingly expensive to maintain and delivering less-effective outcomes for the communities they serve. Chronic underinvestment combined with increased demand means we now have an infrastructure deficit which is estimated to exceed $200 billion. With 90% of our infrastructure stock built since the 1950’s, it is critical to plan for renewals as these assets wear out. #whatdoesittake Funding this infrastructure gap through Government debt alone could double our current Crown borrowings, an unsustainable option that means we need to broaden our thinking💡on how to close this gap. Considering innovative funding mechanisms alongside traditional ones has potential to deliver high quality infrastructure that drives economic growth, boosts productivity and enhances our way of life. Aurecon
Join Infrastructure New Zealand and Aurecon, for the launch of our Asset Recycling paper. We are excited to host two events, the first in Auckland on Tuesday 5 November at 5:30 pm, followed by Wellington on Thursday 7 November at 5:30 pm. This event will showcase our report, produced in partnership with Aurecon, focusing on asset recycling as a critical driver for economic growth. We will explore how maximising the value of existing assets can fund critical infrastructure projects and ensure timely delivery. The panel will explore local and international lessons, the importance of solid governance and technical expertise in shaping a strategic approach to asset recycling for Aotearoa New Zealand. We welcome the opportunity to have you engage with other industry leaders and to hear your insights.
