I was hiring for a Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) role within my team and I uncovered something shocking! Like many CFOs, I thought there was a universal definition of FP&A, and I could not be more wrong. There are as many definitions of FP&A as there are companies. I started wondering why the definition of this role isn’t common to all organizations. The more I interviewed people, the more I understood that the definition depends on the vision of the organization in terms of finance function. I’ve noticed that most companies look at the finance function as a reporting function. Thus, they turn their FP&A department into a reporting machine, spitting out reports without understanding how to leverage them. It's like using a Ferrari just to drive to the mailbox. On the opposite side, my vision as a CFO for Transformer Table is focused on building a data driven organization. The finance department is at the heart of the business, gathering data from different departments. Therefore, the finance function should become the intelligence hub of the company by turning data into insights to take better decisions. By doing so, we position ourselves as business partners with our internal clients, understand their needs, and use that to create value. It turns out I was prone to naïve realism. It’s a cognitive bias that makes you think that you see the world in an objective way. But, my perception was far from being a reality. During the next few days, I’ll share my perspective about finance in a digestible way. I feel that too often we’re turning something simple into something complicated, and it doesn't have to be that way. What’s your thought about the FP&A function? What are the interesting definitions you came across with? #DataDrivenDecisionMaking #BusinessIntelligence #CFOInsights #FinanceTransformation #FinancialPlanning #StrategicFinance #EntrepreneurMindset

Group CFO , Strategic Influencer , Business Turnaround Specialist , Speaker , Writer , Daily Runner,
What is the new role for FP&A ( Financial , Planning & Analysis ) professional in Ever Changing Business world? FP&A professionals need to give tangible contributions to the business regardless the role which they embrace. This is needed more now, in the post pandemic times., with Businesses having urge to grow quick and make up for the lost time . Pandemic ushered a new role " Survivor ", which I find so relevant in these times in 2024. This expects FP&A professionals to understand their businesses and come up with practical solutions .This is non negotiable, simply because the specifics differ from one business to another. Receivables in a contracting business need different actions than in the trading industry with online sales, B2B and B2C as niche customer . Comparing sales days outstanding and analyzing them in absolute terms for these two different businesses can give misleading conclusions. Another area is Pricing for different businesses with standard and customized product lines. FP&A professional can suggest pricing policies like minimum variable pricing for a manufacturing business where the product line is standard and not customized to help penetrate a new territory and increase the top line. The measurements and metrics, for a FP&A professional to consistently monitor the business , have also undergone changes . #Business #Survivor #Leadership #Innovation #Culture

When I started as an FP&A analyst, I had a solid understanding of business concepts from college, but I struggled to see how they fit together in practice. My role was clear, but the bigger financial picture was foggy. This made me hesitant to speak up in meetings or propose solutions. I often thought, "I know my piece, but how does it impact the bottom line?" 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 l𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 p𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 s𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 i𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Everything changed. To make the switch to the new solution, I had to build a three-statement model. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Building that model was my "aha" moment. It was like putting all the pieces of a puzzle together and I finally could see how my role fit into the larger financial picture. I understood how the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement interconnected. This new perspective boosted my confidence and changed how I approached my work. 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 Creating the three-statement model improved my technical skills and helped me understand how different financial components interact. I learned how things like revenue forecasts and expense projections contribute to the overall financial picture. This knowledge made it easier to see how decisions affect the bottom line. The three-statement model has been the most valuable skill I’ve acquired in my career. It’s not just about knowing your piece; it’s about seeing and shaping the entire puzzle. It doesn't matter what stage of your career you are right now. The three statement is the most important skill you need to have. Even if you already made it to the top. That's the skill that will fill the gaps you know you have. That's how you complete the puzzle.
