Did you know that if just 25% of the food lost or wasted was saved it would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people?! You can make a difference! Volunteering at a local food bank is a fantastic way to tackle food waste and hunger at the same time. Last Month, our Sales and Marketing team had an opportunity to assist Northwest Harvest in bagging over 8,000 lbs of beans! These beans will provide 3,300 meals in the Yakima valley. Here's how you can help at a food bank: 🍎Sorting and Packing: Food banks rely on volunteers to sort donated food, ensuring everything is fresh and ready for distribution. 🥪Meal Prep: Many food banks prepare meals for families and individuals in need. Your help with chopping, packaging, or cooking can make a big impact! 🍲Food Rescue: Some food banks pick up perfectly good food from restaurants or grocery stores that would otherwise be thrown away. Bees are good for coffee producers, their families and communities in coffee-growing regions. These regions are good sites for honey bees, as plant diversity within the coffee farm offers excellent floral resources for honeybees. Coffee flowers produce sugary, high quality nectar, and bees improve coffee berry ripening, size and uniformity with their cross-pollination. Bees do not require land ownership, can be maintained by family members, and the many products from bee colonies serve as the local pharmacy. Products can be sold locally or internationally exported alongside coffee. Most importantly, bee products improve family nutrition and provide additional income for coffee farmers. For many Indigenous families living on reserves, accessing fresh groceries means driving an average of 45 minutes to the nearest store, only to face limited options when they get there. This creates a barrier to accessing healthy, nutritious food. Fresh Routes is working to close this gap. With our Mobile Grocery Stores, we bring food right to the reserves, offering fresh, affordable food where it’s needed most. But to keep serving these communities and expand our reach, we urgently need a walk-in cooler. The cooler will allow us to store and transport more food safely and ensure that families on reserves don’t have to worry about the next time they can access fresh produce. I presented my final action research project on the topic "Enhancing food donation awareness among catering businesses in Rhode Island: Understanding legal protections to navigate food donations safely and with minimal risk". My goal in this project is to increase food donations in Rhode Island through catering businesses in order to achieve zero waste. Three threads include perception and behavior of caterers towards leftover food, food donation laws and protocols and Incentives for leftover food donations. These threads helped me to find out the perspectives about food donations among caterers. Through interviews and surveys, I found out some barriers in food donations, and was also able to provide solutions to catering businesses on how to reduce food waste and food insecurity through food donations. Mislabeled items: Products with packaging errors, like missing ingredients or allergen information. Relabeling is too costly, but we have the volunteer resources to repack and relabel these items. Let's break it down! 🏦 Food Bank: Think of it as a large warehouse that collects, stores, and distributes food to various community organizations like shelters, soup kitchens, and pantries. Food banks often work on a regional or national level, serving a wide area and collaborating with food producers, retailers, and donors to gather surplus food. 🛒 Food Shelf: On the other hand, a food shelf is typically a smaller-scale operation located within a community or neighborhood. It directly serves individuals and families in need by providing them with groceries and essential food items. Food shelves rely heavily on local donations and volunteer efforts to keep their shelves stocked and support their community members. Both play critical roles in combating hunger and food insecurity, but they operate in slightly different ways to serve their communities effectively. Whether you're donating to a food bank or volunteering at a food shelf, your contribution makes a real difference in the lives of those facing hunger.

Facing the choice between essentials like milk or electricity, eggs or medications, and even poultry or housing shouldn't be a reality for anyone. Yet, for 1 in 3 of our neighbors facing food insecurity across Massachusetts, these are some of the tough decisions they have to make daily. Thank you to Esha Walia and Boston Globe Media for their recent article highlighting how grocery prices have surged 25% since 2019, forcing twice as many families to seek food assistance compared to pre-pandemic levels and making affording nutritious food more difficult than ever. That’s why GBFB exists. We are here to help and fuel the charitable food system that is responding to this chronic surge in food assistance need. With our purchasing power, we acquire and distribute healthy free food to our neighbors facing food insecurity through a robust network of 600 community partners. That means for every $1 you donate, 2 meals will be provided to a neighbor in need across the 190 cities and towns we serve. During the month of October, businesses and organizations across North County San Diego come together to help Scare Away Hunger by collecting jars of peanut butter for local children and families in need. The Carlsbad Chamber is proud to be a drop-off location all month long! Stop by with your favorite (no glass please) peanut butter anytime Monday-Friday, between 10am-4pm. Why Peanut Butter? Peanut butter is an excellent source of protein for children and families. It’s popular with kids, shelf-stable, and one jar can provide more than 12 sandwiches. Peanut butter is very expensive for the Food Bank to purchase. That’s why this year’s peanut butter food drive will be instrumental in helping stock the Food Bank’s shelves with this nutrient-rich superfood for local families in need. Who Benefits from the Donations? Did you know? 1 in 4 children faces food insecurity in San Diego County, including those living in North County communities.
