Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTF) are designed to provide therapeutic services and programs for youth who struggle with psychiatric, behavioral & emotional disorders, and challenges. Yet, at some facilities the environment is far from "therapeutic". In 2023, there were 565 total injuries reported by PRTFs. One facility reported 171 incidents of self-harm. Do these facilities sound like a “Safe Therapeutic Environment” for children and youth to be? Please read. Parts 2 and 3 are linked in the article.
Read "How facilities meant to help kids with mood disorders are falling short in North Carolina" - the first in WUNC Jason DeBruyn's three-part series investigating NC's psychiatric residential treatment facilities (PRTFs) where children with complex behavioral needs are sent for care. "North Carolina ranks 42nd in the country with the highest prevalence and lowest access to mental health services for youth. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for North Carolina youth ages 10 to 18. The state health department has named improving child and adolescent behavioral health a top priority. But advocates say the state falls short of this goal."

"If we look 10 years, 20 years into the horizon with substance use, this could be a really important part of breaking that cycle." -Sara Stulac, MD, MPH, BMC pediatrician and SOFAR’s medical director In 2017, BMC launched the SOFAR (Supporting Our Families through Addiction and Recovery) program to provide a medical home and wraparound services for children who have a parent with substance use disorder. Earlier this year, the SOFAR team launched its first support group for such grandparents, due to an increase in grandparents stepping up for children affected by parental substance use, and they have to navigate complex challenges. Food for Thought Friday 🤔 Research shows that having a parent incarcerated puts children at higher risk for mental health issues. 👉 HOWEVER, positive relationships can make all the difference! When incarcerated parents can maintain healthy bonds with their kids—through communication, visits, or family therapy—this buffers the trauma. Their children show fewer risky behaviors and higher school achievement. Even in difficult situations, small gestures to nurture family connections can have big impacts. That’s why programs like ours that bring families together during incarceration are so important. The same supportive communities lifting up caregivers also embrace the next generation. 💙 When it comes to reform, the wellbeing of families should be the priority. Justice policy can shape lives. If we make room for relationships to thrive, they in turn, make us stronger.

So happy to be able to share my thoughts on this subject!
Featured in Psychology Today, Outpatient Program Manager Daniel Sexton LMHC, CASAC-Master, ICADC explores how long-standing societal norms can make men feel shameful or hesitant when addressing their trauma and other internal struggles in his article "What We Get Wrong About Men." "The internalized stigma associated with being vulnerable acts as a defense mechanism to protect one from the judgment of others and as a prison for those suffering from experiences outside the norms perpetrated by it," says Sexton.
