In the wake of this pressing issue, Rosterfy’s latest white paper, 'How Volunteer Managers and Fundraising Teams can work together to meet fundraising targets' provides a roadmap for collaboration that could be instrumental in overcoming the funding shortfall. I have been working at Marrickville Legal Centre for 9 years and have never witnessed the type of demand for our services that we are experiencing now. Conditions are hard out there and they're becoming increasingly harder for those that are already struggling. We have an amazing group of staff and volunteers who go above and beyond to try to meet this need but sadly, like many community legal centres, we do not have the resources to help everyone. This isn't fair. People should be able to engage effectively with our justice system irrespective of their level of income. This is why we launched the Low Bono Legal Service (LBLS) in 2020. The LBLS service model offers affordable fixed-fee representation for those who cannot afford private lawyers but are ineligible to access free legal support. Since its inception, the LBLS has assisted 364 clients, recovering $3.4 million in entitlements. The fees generated through this service have enabled MLC to employ an additional lawyer, which means we can help more people. We are also working closely with Women's Legal Service QLD, the EDO and Microsoft Gold Partner, Barhead Solutions, to develop a new legal practice management system called Consensus for Purpose. Built on Microsoft’s Dynamics 365, Consensus for Purpose will streamline the entire client journey and reduce the administrative burden through automation and AI. This will free up our limited resources to focus on legal work and speed up the process for those needing help. These projects capture the innovative culture at MLC that is forever exploring new ways to help more people. We will never receive enough funds from government or donations to meet demand, which is why we need to be more creative in how to do more with less. This year we’re asking for donations to help advance these projects. Every dollar donated to MLC goes further, ensuring that more individuals receive the legal support they desperately need. Each year, the partners of C. Hoare & Co. donate up to 10% of the bank’s profits to the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), which makes grants to a wide range of charitable causes. The top 300 foundation grant-makers in the UK donated £3.7bn in 2021-22. Although the GBT’s contribution to this is comparatively small, the Hoare family believes it can play an important role through funding early-stage initiatives that prove a model; this allows larger resources to follow once the approach has been validated. An example of catalytic funding is the GBT’s support of Project Limitless, a charity set up to provide children with soft prosthetic limbs. The family could see how these custom designed limbs allow children to do so much more than is possible with standard NHS prosthetics and was delighted to be able to fund a ladder of pilot projects which allowed Project Limitless to demonstrate the success of their approach and scale activities accordingly.
