This afternoon, the FOMC cut the Federal Funds target rate by a decisive 50 basis points to a range of 4.75% to 5%. The change is welcome news for financial institutions in light of the rate’s extended plateau that elevated funding costs and seriously eroded profitability. But bringing down deposit rates and achieving anywhere near a full home-lending recovery will take time, so financial institutions need to prepare now. Last Friday, Curinos' head of retail deposits and lending Adam Stockton spoke with The New York Times' Ann Carrns on banks' efforts to acquire new long-term customers with cash bonuses.
