"Federal agencies can use the military spouse non-competitive hiring process to fill positions on either a temporary or permanent basis. You’re eligible if you are: A spouse of an active duty member of the armed forces. A spouse of a service member who is 100% disabled due to a service-connected injury at the time of separation from military service. A spouse of a service member killed while on active duty. You are no longer eligible if you remarry. You must meet certain criteria for each of these eligibility categories. Learn more about the specific criteria for military spouses. Your eligibility does not entitle you to a job within the Federal Government. ❌Another potential bias when hiring that I’ve recently seen is companies asking in job applications if a candidate is currently active duty military 👀 The “are you a protected veteran” question is legally required however asking about current duty orders on an application could lead to discrimination due to employers not wanting to work with order related schedules. You can work outside employment while in transition from military service and can also work while active duty with proper permission from command. You could also be a reservist and on active duty orders. Service members also do not have to disclose veteran status in interviews either. There are so many small details that could lead to bias that all companies should avoid.

Most leaving the military are quickly trying to scrub the military jargon from their resume, which is one of the tasks we help with. However, this is not ideal if you are trying to get into *certain* Federal jobs and of course, jobs with defense contractors. Recruiters looking for prior military will crawl LinkedIn searching military keywords to find veterans, some get frustrated when they find out many veterans are flying under the radar with civilian terminology. Only convert the language you are using to get hired if you are targeting civilian employers or  more administrative and clerical Federal jobs. Decision makers for Federal jobs such as Foreign Service Officers and TSA K9 handlers understand military verbiage very well and they look for it. Know your audience.
