It is no secret that most consumers are confused about recycling. Even with common items having #1 or #2 embossed or printed on the plastic package, only about 1/3 of those items get recycled. That means that only 3 out of 10 plastic bottles, that can be recycled, actually do. Colored plastic adds even more complication. There is even soft demand for rPET. Market demand was down by 15% in 2023. Some theorize that bottom-line pressures and over-inventory due to COVID-19, may have been factors. Consumer aversion to plastic, in general, may be another. There is no wrong way to recycle steel cans. If it is steel, it can be recycled indefinitely, without loss of quality and with no special instructions to the consumer. Most states and municipalities will accept recycled tin cans in curbside collection. There is no need to remove labels. But do consumers know that? Is your tote bag as green as you think? The answer might surprise you 👇🏻 A whopping 2 million plastic bags are used every minute worldwide. However, we're seeing a lot more stores stocking paper bags and people carrying tote bags. That's good, right? Well, it depends how you look at it. To most people, a tote bag seems most environmentally friendly because it’s reusable, right? Well, actually.. considering the impact of production, we need to use a tote bag 7100 times in order to offset the environmental impact compared to a classic plastic bag. That’s using it 3x per week for 46 years 😬 If you use your tote bag every day, then you’ll reach that number in 20 years. Let's compare a plastic bag with a paper bag. A plastic bag: → has longer durability → is more likely to be reused → less energy production impact So, a plastic bag is better in that sense.. ..but then again it will stay around for decades. A paper bag is biodegradable and poses no threats to wild life, so this is my emergency option. Otherwise I use my tote bag as often as possible! Did anyone ever tell you to peel the labels off your plastic containers? In an article entitled Collaboration is Vital to Driving Recycling Success, in Packaging World Magazine's January/February edition, the plastic sorting process is described. Of the only 9% of plastics that are recycled, there is an additional percentage that is excluded due to contaminants. Contaminants include shrink sleeve labels, and adhesives that do not allow a label to separate from the container. When a label covers more that 55% of a container, it may be eliminated as recyclable PET during the sorting process. PVC and paper labels can cause black flakes in post-consumer PET. Behaviors, such as wish-cycling, cause difficulties at the commercial processing centers (jams, shutdowns, and additional expenses). Consumers place materials in recycling bins that they hope centers will deal with, making the sorting process more tedious. With steel packaging, labels, inks and coatings burn off in the recycling process, along with all other contaminants. There are no steps or guessing games with steel can recycling. Even if a tin can is discarded with other disposables, it can be separated from other waste by magnet and recycled. Manufacturers of plastic, glass and films, are considering recyclability in their packaging design, from the container itself to the adhesives and labels. There is great demand for products and containers with post-consumer, recycled content.
