👋 Another new class this spring, for those for those still tinkering with their schedules: Our fantastic PhD student, Debra Carroll-Beight, is offering a new course, BETH 602 (Section 124) Queer Bioethics, worth 1.5 credits! If you're into challenging norms and exploring the impact of bioethics on LGBTQI+ communities, this one's for you. 📅 When: First 7 Wednesdays, January 17 to Feb 28 🕰️ Time: 10 am - 12 pm Description: Our medical, legal, and socio-cultural practices are built upon our collective understandings (and sometimes misunderstandings) of sex, gender, and what we designate as “normal.” This course will challenge heteronormative and cisnormative ideas and practices that impact LGBTQI+ communities. We will explore the forms and functions of bioethics relevant to LGBTQI+ health situated among frameworks of queer, feminist, crip, and disability theories. Through the course, we will assess contemporary debates surrounding sex and gender, and how these discussions interact with bioethical principles. We aim to equip students with the ability to synthesize various theoretical disciplines in addressing bioethical concerns pertinent to LGBTQI+ populations. The course seeks to deepen students'; understanding of the complexities of queer bioethics and to contribute to the development of inclusive and equitable health policy and practice. 🎓 It's an opportunity to learn from a fellow student, broaden your perspective, engage in lively discussions, and contribute to a more inclusive approach to health. Don't miss out! 🌈📚 #QueerBioethics #LGBTQI #inclusivehealthcare #LearnWithUs

In recent years, more than 2,500 books have been removed from school districts around the US, labeled as banned, restricted, or challenged, and made unavailable to millions of students. By no accident, the themes targeted are the usual scapegoats of the American Right: LGBTQ+ issues, Black History, and women’s empowerment, impeding the power of future generations to develop their own thoughts and opinions on critical social issues. #OscarNominated The ABCs of Book Banning reveals the voices of the impacted parties, and inspires hope for the future through the profound insights of inquisitive youthful minds. At Global Health Film, we see The ABCs of Book Banning as a fantastic springboard into many wider considerations around the control of knowledge and information in #GlobalHealth including: 📖 equitable and self-determined access to education and information 📖 politics and control, such as the promotion/restriction of health information during the Covid pandemic and the early years of the HIV/AIDS pandemic 📖 #epistemicjustice : who produces the knowledge? who gets credit? which and whose knowledge counts? At our livestreamed screening and discussion on Wednesday 10 April, we will explore these themes - and many more with Dawn Henwood, PhD, knowledge translation specialist, Sridhar Venkatapuram, Associate Professor in Global Health and Philosophy King's College London, and Trish Adlesic , co-director of The ABCs of Book Banning. More panel details to follow shortly. #BookBanning #BannedBooks #censorship #dei 🎟️on sale now at globalhealthfilm.org - free for Global Health Film members - all welcome!

A recent study sheds light on how children’s views on gender roles can be positively influenced through diverse role models and inclusive environments. It’s fascinating to see that the attitudes they adopt during their formative years are shaped not only by direct interactions but also by the broader societal messages they receive. This underscores the importance of creating spaces where kids can encounter various perspectives, helping them understand that their potential isn't limited by outdated stereotypes. By fostering diversity and inclusion in our communities, schools, and homes, we can empower the next generation to embrace equity and challenge norms. #GenderEquity #Diversity #Inclusion #Empowerment #FutureGenerations

I recently from Yeh Ek Soch Foundation had the privilege of attending a transformative 4-day workshop organized by The YP Foundation , centered around the theme of Rethinking Violence And Masculinities Perspectives (REVAMP) Institute. This experience has profoundly shifted my understanding of masculinities and its intersection with issues of gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, and rights. In today's world, the imperative to involve men and young boys in addressing gender inequalities is widely recognized. However, what sets REVAMP apart is its focus on going beyond the conventional narratives of men merely as perpetrators or partners for change. Instead, it delves into the multifaceted nature of masculinities, considering how factors such as gender, caste, class, religion, and sexuality intersect to shape an individual's sense of self as a man. The REVAMP Institute serves as a vital platform for young practitioners like myself who are dedicated to working with young men and boys or tackling issues related to masculinities. By encouraging participants to critically reflect on prevailing norms and stereotypes, it equips us with the tools to develop more inclusive and effective strategies for gender-transformative programming. During the intensive training, we explored a range of themes including gender identities and socialization, intersectional masculinities, sexuality, misinformation, and emerging perspectives for developmental programming. Through interactive methodologies such as film screenings, group work, and discussions, we engaged in deep analytical conversations that challenged our preconceptions and broadened our horizons. Together, let's challenge existing paradigms, redefine masculinities, and pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive future. #REVAMP #Masculinities #GenderEquality #YouthLeadership #ChangeMakers

Diversity has no boundaries and thus equity and inclusion shouldn’t have any. It is crucial that we expand the reach of diversity to gender (sex assigned at birth) and gender identity. To ensure best practices at work, respecting individuals for who they are and for who they identify themselves as; is one of the thing that matters in a diverse and striving world. This course gives insights into the experiences of non-binary people and helps the learner to acknowledge what lies on the spectrum and ways to go about it. I would highly recommend you to give this course a thought to be more inclusive and empathetic towards those who have a unique narative to share. As we develop understanding how what it means to be in their shoes (from early years of life); we are then in a position to have a open ear, eye and mind to taking steps for what it means to be them in a specific context today! #diversity #diversityandinclusion #workplacewellbeing #wellbeing #equitydiversityinclusion #inclusion

How can CME writers drive change in the evolving medical landscape? In the latest episode of Write Medicine, Caitlyn Tivy, DPT, and I discuss how CME/CPD professionals can influence an education shift toward women's health and address care for LGBTQ+ individuals. She shares that in the past year, the conversation has gained momentum, with the NIH pushing initiatives to require researchers to consider the impact of sex on their results. Now, researchers are compelled to justify the use of only male subjects, requiring sound reasons for their choices. However, implementing these changes will take time, with estimates spanning at least a decade for medical schools and even longer for healthcare providers already in practice. Listen in on your preferred platform to explore how writers can be agents of change and have the potential to bridge the gaps in traditional medical education: https://lnkd.in/gYRrFM6K #CMEwriters #inclusive #womenshealth

My team is recruiting for research study participants who are culturally-specific and/or LGBTQ+-specific sexual assault survivor advocates. We are specifically seeking participants whose advocacy prioritizes communities of which they are also a member (for example: queer advocates who prioritize queer survivors, Black advocates who prioritize Black survivors) within the United States. In a 1-hour interview via Zoom, we will ask questions to better understand the work that you do and organizational and structural barriers and facilitators to care and healing for survivors who are Black, Indigenous, and/or people of color and/or LGBTQIA2S+. We are currently seeking nominations (including self-nominations) of individuals or organizations who do this type of advocacy. If you're interested or would like to refer someone DM me or send me an email. https://lnkd.in/gThj_tJs We aren't recruiting directly through social media because of imposter participants. My colleague and I talk about that issue affecting our previous study in this paper: https://lnkd.in/g3R3VVnz Linking organizations' or advocates' websites/profiles is also cool. We're assembling a list of nominees for outreach and would love to learn about your or your colleagues' important work!
