Last week I highlighted some of my top takeaways from the fantastic Workplace Trends Spring Summit. One of the most popular topics was "how & with who in mind has your workspace been designed for?" "Beware of the hippo when designing your workspaces." "Be more chameleon: Know your threats, challenges and be able to predict what’s lurking around the next corner." Iain Shorthose of Paragon Workplace Solutions Iain was kind enough to forward me Paragon's latest workplace effectiveness report which includes more on Hippos (and Chameleons 😉). It's a great read, these were some of my favourite points: ⭐A ‘positive workplace environment and culture’ is sited as a top reason to pick an employer – a 17% boost in productivity & a 41% decrease in absenteeism ⭐Living fossil workplaces (a term for a very rare species that doesn’t evolve) v Chameleon workplaces (resilient and that aren’t leaving anything to chance to ensure survival) ⭐If an organisation makes decisions about the workplace based on anecdotal feedback, and only responds to the views of the HIPPO, businesses will find themselves in deep water. Another fantastic Workplace Trends Spring Summit with Maggie Procopi! So sorry I couldn't be there in person this time but none the less, brilliantly planned & the speakers were fabulous thank you 🙏 so much! So many highlights, insights, projections around the physical, behavioural & emotional aspects & considerations for the future of the office & the workplace as a whole... 1. "Beware of the hippo." - the highest paid person's opinion. Do not design your workspace around the hippo! They won't always agree or have the same requirements as others in your business & you run the danger of not attracting the right talent. & "Are we getting the right balance between the focus on the physical attendance versus employee's psychological connection?" Iain Shorthose 2. "The chameleon workplace - the office is having to work harder than ever before to survive & thrive." Iain Shorthose and yet "The office is one of the spaces where we come to learn from & share experiences with others." Naomi Sakamoto, AIA 3. Offices pre-pandemic were designed for how we thought people wanted to work & now we're designing for workplace experience using engagement, participation & recognising individual needs & what makes people thrive. Ian Ellison 4. "It's not always about what we spend money on, the shiny finishes in a building, a lot of it's behavioural. There needs to be more celebrating with our team over the little wins, catching up & sharing experiences." 5. How do we better understand hybrid working at a participant level, through the eyes of those doing it every day? How does it feel, what does it look like in real life & culture? Studies by Dr Harriet Shortt have found the liminal, in between moments & spaces that hybrid workers fill really productively, maximising their day & adjusting behaviour well. "Flexible boundaries really support me." BUT She also discussed the blurred boundaries of work & home life - "every room looks like my office, I'm not giving the kids 100%." "It's up to leaders to look at how this can be improved. If we have to make the boundaries ourselves then that's another form of labour - it's a leadership role to consider the uniqueness of everyone." Choose days in the office wisely - use them for: "Coming together, engagement, sharing success, stories, frustrations, concerns. A place of hospitality - the currency of sociality, collaboration & connectivity." Shortt, 2018 In conclusion, this conference was incredibly impactful in terms of highlighting the needs of individuals in the workplace, curating social places, down to a sensory level, individual comfort, replicating nature.
