This week, Tyler Abrams, co-lead of the DIII-D Plasma Interacting Technology group, gave a presentation on how DIII-D is supporting the fusion industry at the 26th Technology of Fusion Energy meeting. Highlights included an explanation of DIII-D capabilities and flexibility to support evaluation of industry approaches and materials, as well as a description of available resources for machine learning/artificial intelligence development and diagnostic & actuator testing. He also explained the non-proprietary user agreement process, which allows new organizations to join the program as active participants in as little as a single day! This on-going work in the DIII-D program provides key access and resources to accelerate fusion commercialization. #ThrowbackThursday🇨🇭 1974: the facility we know today as HIPA was commissioned based on a visionary idea for a Swiss "meson factory" born in 1962. 🌠At that time, in 1974, HIPA was called the "SIN Facility" and belonged to the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research SIN. 🌠In February 1974, the first mesons were successfully produced here using so-called targets, special pieces of graphite onto which the proton beam is directed. 🌠The SIN facility became HIPA, the High Intensity Proton Accelerator in 1988, when PSI was created from the merger of SIN west of the Aare and the Swiss Federal Institute for Reactor Research EIR east of the river. 🌠Over the past decades, the facility has been upgraded, gradually increasing the number of protons, mesons, muons, and neutronsthat the facility produces per second. Today, nowhere else in the world are so many muons that can be used for research being produced every second as they are here! The development of the “meson factory” is far from complete. The planned next upgrade "IMPACT" will increase the number of muons available per second by a factor of 100. #HappyBirthdayHIPA #HIPA #IMPACT #ResearchAtPSI

Those in the fusion community have likely heard a lot about the stable heat and particle flux detachment in Wendelstein 7-X. We have been able to operate in detachment for 30s, without any real "limits" (the plasma ran through to the programmed end). However, our new paper, recently accepted to Nuclear Fusion, shows that the geometry of our island scrape-off layer (SOL) plays a large role in our detachment behavior. We see a starkly contrasting radiation pattern when we operate in the so-called "low iota" configuration, which also appears to be unstable at high radiated power fractions! Probing the limits of our stable operation regimes is extremely important: future stellarator reactors need a SOL geometry optimized for stable, high performance. We are planning more experiments in the upcoming operational campaigns (OP2.2/2.3) to better characterize our radiation stability! Link to the article is given below: https://lnkd.in/d2cbDxtK

This #experiment ran until recently at GSI/FAIR: 💠⚪️ In-beam test of a TOF-DE-E method for Multi Nucleon Transfer reactions⚪️ 💠 ⚪️Machine: UNILAC 💠 Ion: 14-Ar (argon) ⚪️Energy: 11,4 MeV/u 💠 Intensity: 10 Hz ⚪️Pulse: 1 ms To investigate Multi Nucleon Transfer reactions, a new method is tested for identifying the reaction products. Four high-resolution time-of-flight detectors are combined with a high-resolution microcalorimeter and energy-loss absorbers to identify the mass as well as the nuclear charge state. ☢️ H3D, Inc.’s GammaTrend system provides continuous monitoring of radiological sources in nuclear power stations, complementing traditional water chemistry and radiation measurements. ✅ Originally developed in response to a need for better monitoring of CRUD bursts, it can also be used for coolant outage, radiochemistry measurements, and resin bed accumulation. 🔎 Using H3D’s S100 high-resolution CZT gamma spectrometers, GammaTrend can detect radionuclides that collect in pipes, including gamma emitters like Ag-100m that can be missed by typical water sampling methods. 👉 You can learn more by clicking here: https://lnkd.in/eMxAAXxC

To help accelerate the deployment of new reactor designs, GAIN has been working with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information, the Office of Nuclear Energy, and several national laboratories to locate and review applied technology documents from legacy reactor research and development programs 📄⚛️ During the review process, these documents may be deemed public or export controlled. If the documents are cleared for public release, they are made available on OSTI.gov. If they are marked export controlled, advanced reactor developers can request documents through GAIN’s Legacy Document Release Process. 💡 Learn more about the GAIN Legacy Document Release Process: https://lnkd.in/g4A3Jbbp
