𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐰 $2.3𝐁𝐍 𝐢𝐧 𝐐1 𝐘𝐨𝐘 (24%) Entire market? No, just Amazon. Let’s put this another way, 𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘯 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘸 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴' 𝘪𝘯 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳. And Amazon, already at phenomenal scale, is outpacing market growth (at projected 20% YoY). Today we continue to see most #RetailMedia dollars consolidating in just one player. When did this happen before? At the acceleration point of digital marketing when it became easier to push advertising through just a few key players (namely Google and Meta). For all other retailers, a couple of key watch outs here that I hope serve as catalysts for accelerating efforts within your organization: 📌At a certain point - very soon - if you haven’t reached critical scale (assume $1BN+), you could easily become a dispensable line-item on a broader media plan. Realistically, you need to be growing at 50%+ YoY to remain relevant. 📌Consolidation is inevitable (think the programmatic transition from ad networks in the 2010s). Plan now to be a leader in a consolidated state vs. a small piece of the pie. 📌To the extent that ‘trade dollars are shifting to retail media’, it’s not shifting within your organization, it’s going to Amazon. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 ‘𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘷𝘴. 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢’ 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘦. 𝘛𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 ‘𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘷𝘴. 𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘯’. 📌Amazon, Walmart, Tesco and others are clearly committed - and it’s paying off. Be it partnering for resources or managing in-house, this requires a dedicated commitment of talent, technologies, innovation and change that are not encumbered by normal volatile retail behaviors (i.e. hiring freezes). 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪-𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 - one that needs to be integrated into your core ways of working. Differentiation at this point by way of technology or measurement or offerings is pretty difficult to achieve (there is certainly a baseline to this, but it doesn’t make you stand out). If your suppliers perceive you taking it seriously, they will too. #Retail
