Live Nation Entertainment reveals 20% surge for concert attendance in 2023📈 1️⃣ Live Nation's Record-Breaking Year: Live Nation reported 2023 as its "biggest year ever" for live music, with a 20% increase in concert attendance, totaling over 145 million fans across 50,000 events. This resulted in a 36% rise in annual revenues to $22.7 billion and an operating profit of $1.07 billion. 2️⃣ CEO Commentary: Live Nation's President and CEO, Michael Rapino, attributes the industry's success to the growing demand for live music experiences, facilitated by digital connectivity between artists and global audiences. 3️⃣ Pipeline for Large Venues: The company revealed that 65% of large venue slots for the year were booked, indicating strong demand. This is a significant increase from the previous year's 50% booking rate at the same time. 4️⃣ Grassroots Venue Concerns: While Live Nation's success is notable, it also highlights disparities in the live music industry, with smaller grassroots venues struggling financially. Calls have been made for a portion of the industry's growth to support these essential establishments. 5️⃣ Initiatives for Grassroots Support: Live Nation's subsidiary, Ticketmaster UK, introduced an optional donation feature to support grassroots venues. However, there's room for expanding such initiatives globally to ensure the broader live music ecosystem's sustainability. Overall, Live Nation's exceptional financial results underscore the robustness of the live music industry but also raise awareness of the need to address disparities and support grassroots venues for a more inclusive and thriving music ecosystem. Yuqin Yang ’24 pitched Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: LYV) on April 8, 2024. Live Nation Entertainment operates as a live entertainment company headquartered in Beverly Hills, California. It is the world's largest ticket seller and promoter of live entertainment, which connects over 670 million fans across all of its concerts and ticketing platforms in about 50 countries. It also owns and operates entertainment venues and manages the careers of music artists. Yuqin's investment thesis highlighted the potential growth of the whole live music industry, which has rebounded quickly after COVID-19, and the industry is expected to remain attractive with a steady growth outlook, which is estimated to be worth $38 billion annually by 2030. Yuqin also highlighted Live Nation's track record and reputation both domestically and internationally, which provides it with a stronger position in the industry and more extensive database compared with its competitors. Due to fellow students’ views on Live Nation's current high beta and lack of similar public companies to compare with, the class concluded that investing in LYV would raise potential risks and ultimately voted not to add LYV to the portfolio.

Since merging with Ticketmaster in 2010, Live Nation Entertainment has exploded in growth—from a $2 billion market cap to over $25 billion today. CEO Michael Rapino has led the charge, reshaping the live music industry. Let’s look at how they got here: Vertical Integration: They control everything—tickets, promotion, artist management, and venues—allowing them to dominate the live music ecosystem. Global Expansion: By acquiring promoters and venues worldwide, they’ve locked in exclusive deals, now dominating concerts and festivals globally. The Shift to Live Experiences: As streaming income dropped, artists turned to touring for revenue, making Live Nation essential for big-name acts. Sponsorship & Advertising: VIP packages and brand partnerships have helped fuel growth beyond ticket sales. But their rise hasn’t been without controversy. Concerns have grown over monopolistic control, especially regarding ticket prices and competition. As more artists face challenges selling out their tours, it’ll be interesting to see how Live Nation navigates this potential issue. "One fan who goes to a music concert is more profitable than ten thousand fans who stream" Let’s break down the numbers: (simple math) - Spotify costs less than LKR 800 per person for an individual plan. If it's a family plan, this number drops even further per person. - A live concert ticket? Easily LKR 5,000 or more for a local event. For example, the average fan attending a Coldplay concert in India spent between LKR 15,000 – 120,000 on a ticket, and a fan attending Taylor Swift’s Eras concert tour was a thousand dollars (LKR 300,000). - A survey of concert-goers shows that many people attend 5-10 concerts per year, with dedicated fans seeing up to 50 concerts annually! These numbers skyrocket when we focus on Southeast Asia, where the demand for live music has surged post-pandemic. Bottom line: Live music generates far more revenue than streaming. Now, here's the thing: in most cases, the cost of buying something online versus in-person is roughly the same. But in music, spending on real-world experiences like concerts is hundreds of times more than what we spend on digital streaming. Let’s compare: In 2023, the adjusted operating income (AOI) margin for ticketing services was 37%, or around $1.1 billion off of $3 billion in revenue. The takeaway? Even a small number of fans attending concerts generate way more profits than streaming ever could. The head of Sony Music Group recently called live music a "gold mine"—saying it’s far more lucrative than streaming. And we haven’t even factored in all the other perks for musicians: - More profit from ticket sales. - Merchandise sales at concerts often bring in even more than tickets. - Fans who attend concerts tend to stream artists more after seeing them live. So, when you add it all up, one fan who goes to a concert is far more valuable than ten thousand who stream Source: Adopted from Ted Gioia Substack Video: CIRCUS MAXIMUS by Travis Scott

The term "ShowBiz" aptly highlights that shows are the primary revenue stream in the Music Business. Historically, artists have gained recognition and income through live performances, encompassing the stage, the performance itself, and the audience. The internet has ushered in the streaming era, where anyone can access music from any artist worldwide via mobile apps. This shift has brought about a frenzy around streaming numbers, with an intense focus on stream counts and monthly listeners. However, this obsession, particularly detrimental to new artists, overlooks the critical role of live shows and tours in achieving true potential. From a business perspective, tour ticket sales significantly outperform streaming royalties in terms of revenue for both artists and labels. Billboard's Money Maker report for 2019 underscores this point: The Rolling Stones earned $65 million, with a mere $2 million from streaming and a staggering $60.5 million from touring. Ariana Grande made $44.3 million, with $8.2 million from streaming and $33.7 million from touring. Elton John earned $43.3 million, with $2.2 million from streaming and $39.5 million from touring. In 2023, Taylor Swift earned over $1 billion from her worldwide tour, compared to just over $100 million from streaming. The takeaway is clear: Touring is not only a significant revenue source but also a pathway to fame. True fame is epitomized when 20,000 people sing your song word-for-word at a packed event. The global ascension of Afrobeats has been an extraordinary journey, a literal tour showcasing African originality to the world. From the pioneering Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade of the 80s, to the influential 2face, P Square, and Dbanj of the 2000s, and finally, to the groundbreaking Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy of the 2010s, this genre has consistently evolved, culminating in sold-out concerts and massive arenas worldwide, solidifying its status as a global genre. Touring Data illustrates this point: • Wizkid's "Made in Lagos Tour" (3 shows): $2,875,468 • Burna Boy's "I Told Them Tour" (15 shows): $15,469,395 • Davido's "Timeless Tour" (4 shows): $2,779,251 Beyond financial benefits, touring offers numerous positive impacts on an artist's career. These include connecting with fans, creating more fan-centered music, improving breath control, maintaining audience attention, enhancing song retention, and boosting the artist's voice and charisma. In the pursuit of superstardom, live performances hold more value than streaming numbers. A better perspective is that good shows lead to more streams. Therefore, every artist and label should prioritise balancing live performances and streaming numbers, with live performances taking precedence. #Onvail #Touring #Streaming #LivePerformances #ShowBusiness #Showbiz #Music #RecordingArtists #Afrobeats #superstar #recordlabel
