IMPACT 23 Nonprofit Spotlight: Orange County United Way: Purpose Moment Livi Kerszenbaum, MBA, Sr. Director, Corporate Social Responsibility, OC United Way https://lnkd.in/gpJXZpVH Livi Kerszenbaum opened with a personal story and sobering reminder that anything can happen to anybody at any time; describing the day her husband was severely injured in a motorcycle accident, rendering her as the sole provider for her family in an instant. Kerszenbaum cited having savings, access to state assistance programs, and supportive families, friends, and employers as essential to getting through those difficult months. Unfortunately, many who are faced with adversity lack access to these crucial resources and support systems. The 'OC Way' is about being there for one another, particularly during difficult times. Orange County United Way, a local independent nonprofit, epitomizes this ethos. Every dollar raised directly benefits the local community, impacting over a million lives last year alone. OC United Way focuses on three key initiatives: United For Financial Security United For Student Success United To End Homelessness These initiatives support OC students in graduating high school, aid struggling families in regaining stability, and assist with housing support for the homeless. OCUW operates 211, a free phone-call assistance program connecting tens of thousands of OC residents to vital health and human resources services. Kerszenbaum stressed, “Everybody needs help sometimes, but as humans we need to be of service.” She asserted that serving the collective good is human nature, citing an innate desire to contribute socially. Engaging in community service correlates with lower rates of anxiety and depression, higher overall happiness, and longer life expectancies. Kerszenbaum concluded her presentation by inviting the audience to participate in a purposeful moment. Cards at each seat encouraged attendees to share words of encouragement for struggling veterans experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. A UBI program that is based on supporting the community, privately funded, and with no red tape. They seem to be on the right track, especially if they can get a few philanthropists on board, or even just a few generous souls who have plenty and are willing to support those in need. The way I see it, this is a better way to donate to charity than by giving to organizations who only give a fraction of what they get to the people who need it, or religious organizations who discriminate based on their own moral values. I bet if you played a game of Monopoly, where you took out 7% of what you gained each time around the board and split it up between the other players each time you hit go, nobody would go broke, the game would last forever, and the finances would develop a homeostasis, without financial volatility. Sometimes it is not having that financial seed that keeps people from growing, and financial hardship is one of the top causes driving negative mental health patterns. So a successful system like this would improve mental health, create financial stability, and give people the ability to invest in themselves.
