The liner industry's newest vessel-sharing alliance (VSA), the Gemini Cooperation, is taking a different approach by using a ‘hub & spoke’ operation instead of direct port calls. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd believe this approach will significantly improve schedule reliability, with Hapag-Lloyd adding that the network will be “more reliable and interconnected than traditional setups." However, the strength of the operation is dependent on its weakest link. A delay in feeders, whether at the spoke port or due to bad weather, resulting in ships arriving at the hub simultaneously could pose an operational nightmare for ship planners. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are committed to achieving an ambitious 90% schedule reliability, backed by a strong governance model and contractual obligations. Details of the feeder network to and from spoke ports will be announced later this year when the full schedule is unveiled to customers and partners. Stay tuned for more information as it is released. #GeminiVSA #maersk #hapaglloyd #VSA #hubandspokeoperations https://lnkd.in/gJRG4KKj

A huge paradigm shift for global containership routing is in the offing when Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd join in the Gemini Cooperation space-sharing alliance next year, and institute a hub-and-spoke (as opposed to point-to-point) service model. But Hapag's CEO Rolf Habben Jansen, addressing S&P Global's TPM24 conference in Long Beach today, said it will result in more reliable service to shippers. And when point-to-point services can't achieve better than a 70% on-time record (and are frequently worse), why not try it? "The proof of the pudding is in the eating," Habben Jansen said. "We have to demonstrate that it works." #tpm24 #supplychainbrain

The upcoming launch of the Gemini Cooperation in February 2025 is set to enhance our operational quality at Hapag-Lloyd. Our preparations for the launch are well underway, and we are pleased to provide a network update on our collaboration with Maersk. Gemini is on track to deliver a reliable and interconnected ocean freight network on East-West trades. We understand the importance of stable and transparent solutions for our customers’ supply chains, especially due to global challenges and ongoing disruptions. Therefore, we have jointly designed two network alternatives to address the dynamic situation – both with equal industry-leading schedule reliability. Key elements of the collaboration include: ✔️ Two Ocean Networks designed to meet evolving global challenges ✔️ An alternative Cape routing route to mitigate ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea ✔️ Two Networks, One Target: more than 90% Schedule Reliability via our hub & spoke system ✔️ Up to 340 vessels and 59 services, both mainliners and agile intraregional shuttle services We look forward to the positive impact this collaboration will have on strengthening our operational quality and are committed to continuing to provide reliable transportation to our customers. #Shipping #SupplyChain #Reliability #Connectivity #Sustainability #HapagLloyd #Maersk #GeminiCooperation #OceanFreight

Fast connection with a flexible capacity between hubs and ports
What role do the hubs play in the network of the future? The hubs will play a crucial role in ensuring seamless connections between our 58 services, enabling over 6,000 port-to-port combinations allowing us to optimize transportation routes and ensure efficient delivery to distant destinations🌍🚢 Over the past three years, we've been working to expand our hub capacities. By the time we launch the future network, our hub capacity will have increased by 30%. Following the completions of the expansions we will have: 🌊19 kilometers of berth space 🏗️200 cranes 🚢Capability to handle 500,000 transshipment moves weekly "The hubs are a critical component of the network of the future. They will work together with the network design, cooperation agreement, fleet, processes, and technologies to deliver on industry-leading reliability, reach, and speed. All of these aspects are undergoing careful testing and finetuning to be ready for the February 2025 implementation," says Lars Mikael Jensen, Head of Hubs at APM Terminals. The article discusses the 'hub & spoke' network strategy of the Gemini Cooperation alliance and its potential impact on rival carriers at ports. In North Europe, Gemini's hubs include Rotterdam and German ports like Wilhelmshaven and Bremerhaven, with other ports served via shuttle or feeder services. Some large vessel ports may lose direct call status. Hapag-Lloyd mentioned that customer feedback is being sought before finalizing schedules. The article also touches on potential effects on alliance structures and the maritime industry, considering current geopolitical and supply-demand challenges. https://lnkd.in/esbzVAYt
