Tomorrow, March 30th, is International Day of #ZeroWaste. It's an opportunity to discuss our unique approach to precision agriculture, which grows in harmony with people and nature. #Agriculture is the key to life on this planet, but soil and plant disease can lead to a great deal of waste. That is why we go to great lengths to ensure that our production facilities create zero food waste. How do we do this? For starters, greenhouse agriculture greatly reduces pest exposure while increasing yield per plant. Second, we do not grow our vanilla directly on soil, but rather on an elevated substrate, which gives us more control over our crops. Moving on to the curing stage, we operate a controlled curing facility, where mold has a very low chance of spreading and creating food waste. We also deploy an automatic sorting system that is able to identify high bean humidity prior to packaging. Finally, if for some reason we have leftover #vanilla, we don't throw it away. We turn it into scented vanilla candles. Zero waste is a very important impact parameter at Vanilla Vida - but it's not the only one. Want to learn more about our sustainability journey? Did you know that a single cow can generate about 7 gallons of milk and 100 gallons of waste? But the big question is: what happens to the waste?  The short answer: it’s washed into lagoons where microbes break it down and, in the process, emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
