Is salutogenic design the next shift in the workplace? I have spoken about biophilic design for quite some time, but it appears that there is a new trend which is taking over, which expands on biophilia. Salutogenic design is the act of creating an environment which prevents stress and illness, which promotes wellness and health. It's not a new concept, but it is taking off in popularity. Do you value a good office view more than other workplace perks? Surveys have shown that having access to natural light and views of green spaces matters more to workplace health and happiness than access to barista coffee, on-site childcare and chef-run cafés 😲 Just looking at a green view rather than concrete buildings for five minutes has been shown to calm the mind through activation of the parasympathetic system, slowing down your heart rate and rate of breathing. Moreover, looking at a treescape has been shown to reduce stress – and the greater the tree density, the more beneficial the effect 🌳 What's your view like from your workspace? #happinessatworkweek #internationalweekofhappinessatwork #workplacewellbeing #officedesign #workenvironment

Enhancing Workplace Wellness: Boosting Productivity Through Healthy Office Environments… Recent findings highlight how indoor environments significantly impact our health and productivity. Factors like air quality, lighting, and office layout play crucial roles in our daily experiences. A Harvard study revealed the presence of over 82,000 indoor chemicals, linked to health issues from asthma to immune dysfunction. Prioritising air quality with low-emission furnishings and proper ventilation is essential. Optimal thermal comfort not only improves mood but also reduces sick days. Simple adjustments like maintaining a moderate temperature can enhance employee well-being and performance. Lighting affects our circadian rhythms; incorporating natural light and appropriate task lighting reduces eye strain and supports a healthier workspace. Reducing noise through design choices and noise-cancelling options fosters focus and reduces stress. Encouraging movement and social interaction within the office promotes a healthier lifestyle. Incentivising health initiatives outside work further supports employee well-being. Investing in a healthier workplace isn't just beneficial; it's essential for productivity and employee satisfaction. https://lnkd.in/eXnH4WMb #wellness #health #fitness

We're passionate about improving the quality of people's lives by improving the buildings that they spend their lives in. Typically, we do this through advising developers and designers on how to make healthy spaces. Now we're moving towards supporting HR departments and companies in making improvements to workspaces for healthier, happier and more efficient employees. This week, we've written an article featured on the front page of Make A Difference Summits website that explores the relationship between office design and staff well-being. We see far too many examples of companies offering a number of 'perks' but making staff work in poorly lit, poorly ventilated spaces without anywhere to eat their lunch away from their desks. If this sounds familiar, we are now offering office health review services to help companies improve the design of their spaces to support workplace well-being. Click the link to read the article and let us know your thoughts in the comments. #healthyoffices #healthyofficedesign #workplacewellbeing #workplacewellbeingsupport #increasingproductivity
