Welcome to another engaging and empowering year with The Society of Professional Women (SPW). As we begin 2024, we'd like to thank all of the members of The Main Line Chamber of Commerce, the supporters, and sponsors of SPW's mission for their continued advocacy and loyalty. We've noticed an increased amount of attention being paid to environments that make individuals feel safe as part of the dialogue around our work at The Main Line Chamber and SPW. Along with the heightened attention being brought to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging work in recent years, many companies have brought in experts to strengthen efforts to attract and welcome people of diverse backgrounds into their workforces. Companies are also encountering a unique set of challenges when it comes to the psychological safety of their employees. Environments that are seen as unsafe contribute to a lack of understanding, innovation, ideas, engagement and productivity. When we make people feel safe, they are more likely to feel heard and be heard. It's a good business practice to make people feel safe, not just physically but psychologically as well. In addition, since the pandemic, hybrid offices propose a concern for those who are the only ones in their office buildings and leave work alone - whether walking to public transit or a largely empty parking lot. In 2023, SPW hosted more than 1,000 businesspeople in person for the first time since 2019. While bringing people together again provides connection, knowledge and resources, we looked for trends and topics of importance that companies share with us when planning for next year. That is why we are addressing the important conversation on psychological and physical safety as we begin this New Year on Wednesday, January 31st at The Desmond Hotel Malvern, A DoubleTree by Hilton for "Unlocking the Power of We: Building a Safe & Inclusive Workplace." We hope you will join us for this event and the many others planned. Today I learn “Diversity and Inclusion” and find it is the initial step to understand why diversity and inclusion is so important in the work place, and this course provides me with the basics to start making a real difference to the people in my organization, profession, industry, and ultimately the community around me.

In our workshop session today on Fostering Workplace Belonging, we delved into the crucial topic of valuing age. Age stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination not only harm individuals, but also erode solidarity across generations. Our aim is to challenge these barriers and cultivate inclusivity and understanding. Let's work together to build a society where everyone is valued, regardless of age.

On June 19th, 1865, the news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for freedom and equality. After reading Edelman's Business and Racial Justice Special Report, it's clear that employers have a huge opportunity to make positive change, build trust, and gain loyalty in the U.S. by investing in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Respondents agreed that a well-structured diversity program and inclusive work culture can attract and retain talent regardless of age, gender, income, or community. If there is a sense of belonging, it transcends political lines, leading to more employee advocacy.
