It’s true! Even the Olympics face managing the critical role of data in driving its evolution and success, particularly in the context of the Paris 2024 Games. The Conversation UK highlights that the transformation of the Olympics is deeply rooted in the collection, management and utilisation of data. And this isn't just about storing information - it's about the strategic use of data to enhance the overall Olympic experience. As is the case with many businesses and organisations, data has become the backbone of the Olympics' ability to adapt to the digital age and continue to grow. It does this in a number of ways: 🏃♀️📈 Performance Analysis: Data is crucial for analysing athletes' performances. Advanced analytics, often powered by AI, can track and interpret vast amounts of performance data in real-time which allows coaches and athletes to optimise training and strategy. 🪪 Security: Ensuring the safety of athletes, spectators and staff at such a large-scale event relies heavily on data. Security teams use data to monitor potential threats, track movements and respond quickly to incidents. 📢 Broadcasting and Sports Reporting: Data drives the shift in how the Olympics are broadcasted and reported. How, you may ask? Well, rather than just traditional TV viewership numbers, the focus is now on real-time data across all digital platforms. This data helps to understand viewer behaviour and preferences, enabling more targeted and effective content distribution. All in all, data is not just a tool but a foundational element in the ongoing evolution and future success of the Olympic Games. It enables the IOC to adapt to new challenges, optimise operations, enhance the spectator experience and secure new economic opportunities in a time where making proper use of such data is becoming a necessity. "Academics often use data to build in distance...What happens when we take these data points and reanimate them, and give them back their humanity?" --Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom Surveillance and data capture are accelerating at unprecedented rates across all facets of society. The bigger the datasets get, and the faster they are compiled, the harder it can be to see the people that embody it and shape it. Sport is no exception. We wholeheartedly agree with the authors that "...advantages will not be found in capturing data that competitors cannot, but in the ability to manage and transform data into actionable insights." And we also agree that inherent in data management is the responsibility to be clear with all involved about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the data across its whole life cycle from collection to deletion. #dataanalysis #datamanagement

📊 WORST CASE SCENARIO In recent years, performance data analysis in football has been thorough increasingly thanks to the use and development of new technologies that becomes more precise every year. When analyzing a match via GPS technology, we often tend to focus on fixed and general period like Full Match (90 min) or split it in first and second half. However, team average doesn't give an optimal view in terms of intensity, as it tends to underestimate certain values and periods. Trying to analyze smaller match's periods allow us to have a detailed vision of Maximal Physical Demands and give us the opportunity to get more infos on the the peaks/decline periods within the 90 mins; scientific literature is constantly in progress with tis topic and suggest to analyze every 5 minutes periods or, even better, every minutes of match to find the so called 1 minute-peak. Getting this type of guideline let coaches and athletic staff chances to plan and train the team across different time duration and 1 minute peak that allows the players to be conditioned for the maximal demands of competition Here an easy example of team average trends (Distance x Minute) every 5 minutes in a competitive match 📚 Reference: Andrea Riboli, Fabio Esposito & Giuseppe Coratella (2021): The distribution of match activities relative to the maximal intensities in elite soccer players: implications for practice, Research in Sports Medicine. Bradley, P. S., & Noakes, T. D. (2013). Match running performance fluctuations in elite soccer: Indicative of fatigue, pacing or situational influences? Journal of Sports Sciences, 31(15), 1627–1638.
