The vessel is named in honor of Hendrik Hamel, a Dutch sailor who was one of the first Europeans to set foot in Korea. Hamel was born in Damen’s hometown of Gorinchem in the 17th century, where the Hamel Museum is also located, honouring Hamel’s role in the relationship between South-Korea and the Netherlands. Hamel left for the Indies with the VOC (Dutch East India Company) and spent thirteen years in Korea. Following this, he wrote a journal about his experiences – the earliest first-hand account of the country by a westerner. Hendrik Hamel is therefore seen in Korea as the person who opened up the country to the west. #Damen #Hamel #Maritime

The exhibition ”Crossroads: Sweden-Ukraine through 1000 Years” is not only an exhibition. It is also a collaboration about safe-guarding European legacy for future generations. About connecting different parts of cultural heritage: artifacts, archives and immaterial cultural heritage. About links between ancient and contemporary history. But most of all, it is about building bridges between people.

While I believe that #European identity and its successes are rooted in much more than just its Judeo-Christian heritage, I will set that discussion aside for now. Instead, I want to highlight two poignant observations that vividly portray the current state of #Europe: 🎯 "This exaggerated welfare state – beyond necessary solidarity – has been detrimental in two ways. First, more money is spent than is sustainably available, and worse still, too much is expected from the state, resulting in the abandonment of self-responsibility. In this context, people seduced by expediency have started to exchange #personal #freedoms, #critical #thinking and their #identity for an #illusion of #security." This brings to mind Franklin's famous words: "Those who would give up essential #liberty, to purchase a little temporary #safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." 🗽 🎯 "#Free societies worldwide are currently challenged by autocratic systems. A society not only ignoring, but actively dismantling and ridiculing its own identity will not prevail. In order to preserve the essential values of #freedom and self-determination, it is not enough to resist autocrats abroad; it is also necessary to protect and nurture identity at home."
Europe’s diverse cultures and shared Christian heritage have driven its historical success, but its identity is falling by the wayside. Read more in the newest comment by Prince Michael von Liechtenstein: https://lnkd.in/dVWSu6tA

The Harald Schröder was among the first seagoing ships that were built in Western Germany after World War II. As such, she was designed following the limitations stated by the Postdam Agreement between the Allies, signed in August 1945. It included a maximum size of 1.500 GRT, a maximum speed of 12 knots and yhe prohibition to build motor ships. So, this small general cargo steamer was built in 1950 by the Lübecker Maschinenbau AG. Another peculiarity shown by the model is the national flag. A law passed by the Allied Control Council on October the 30th 1946 had declared that German ships were to sail under the "Charlie flag" (the "C" from the International Maritime signal flags). The two German republics would not exist until 1949. The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany came into effect on May the 23rd of that year, but the law that established the federal German flag was to be carried by federal German ships was not approved until February the 8th 1951. For this reason, the Harald Schröder steamed under the Charlie flag during her first months of duty. Her owners, the Richard Schröder shipping company, sold her in 1960 to an investors group from Lichtenstein, that sold her to Yugoslavia owners in 1963. From 1966 on, she was the property of several companies from Panama. She was finally broken up for pieces in Keratsini, Greece, in 1979. This interesting model in a scale of 1:100 is displayed in our section on the History of modern maritime logistics, on deck 6 of the museum. #maritime #museum #hamburg #history
