The expansion of the wastewater treatment plant in Squamish,BC is worth highlighting. It's an important project that doesn’t get much attention. The upgrade will increase treatment capacity, provide system redundancy, increase seismic and flood resiliency, improve plant performance and effluent quality, decrease biosolids production and associated energy usage, and decrease carbon emissions and handling costs. Onsite wastewater treatment systems, or septic systems, are an essential part of the wastewater infrastructure of Sonoma County, but they can impact the environment and surrounding community when not properly maintained or sited. To help mitigate these potential impacts, we partnered with County of Sonoma to examine the locations of septic systems across the county, as well as possible opportunities and alternatives. We used the expertise of both our water and digital teams to develop a report detailing our findings, as well as an information hub housed on County of Sonoma’s website, and an interactive mapping tool. Utilizing the mapping tool provides details on the locations of septic systems throughout the county to better inform wastewater treatment, resulting in positive impacts for both the environment and the community.
