What does nature mean for you? And how does this fit with COP16? Earlier this week I took a few moments to sit in a wet woodland in Devon to consider why nature and COP 16 are so important to me. I would love to hear your thoughts.
The Elizabeth Line has been awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize 2024, a project we are proud to have been a part of. We collaborated on 6 of the 10 new stations delivered as part of this transformative project. From tunneling and station design to fire engineering and acoustics, our team played a key role in shaping the future of London’s transport. Very much looking forward to attending COP16 next week! I’ve spent this last year in Peru, supporting the Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura in the delivery of nationwide, #climateresilient infrastructure. Our approach is promoting the use of #naturebasedsolutions, through the restoration of over 50,000Ha of native ecosystems and flood defences across seventeen Andean coastal watersheds, to deliver myriad benefits for both people and wildlife. This is one of many inspiring projects underway across Latin America helping chart a new relationship between society and nature. I’m excited to share my experience and learn more from others at COP16. I’m looking forward to joining my colleagues from Colombia; Maria Daniela Gonzalez Martinez, Laura Sophia Valencia, Federico Torres and of course with Liz Crump and Tom Butterworth, Arup’s Nature Lead for the UK, India, Middle East and Africa. I’m a proud Colombian. As Arup’s South Leader, I am especially proud of the resilience of our country’s people and natural environment. How cities compete is changing. New challenges and evolving priorities, from global warming and pandemics to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are shifting what we value in cities. This means the attributes they need to succeed are being redefined. It’s no longer just about the present but also about the future. Our latest study offers a fresh look at global cities, assessing their ability to navigate a changing world. We reviewed 63 cities from the Global North and South, from mega-cities to mid-sized ones, using 37 indicators across four measures of competitiveness: Investor Attractiveness, Assets and Infrastructure, Liveability and Loveability, and Urban Management and Governance. Every city is different, with unique advantages and challenges. Our analysis shows that the nature of competitiveness is changing in three main ways: - A renewed imperative to focus on an ever-wider spectrum of urban resilience. - Ongoing demographic shifts impact the needs of residents and the future shape of their city. - The importance of a city’s intangible qualities, like loveability, is rising significantly.
