This week I attended the "Connecting Europe by Air" conference, co-organised by EU institutions and Brussels Airport. Aside from the splendid venue of Brussels Skyhall and my love for Brussels airport, here are a few thoughts on the content.
🌎 The main question was: can we reconcile sustainability and connectivity? It was enriching to hear the ideas of not only Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), but also aircraft manufacturing (engine efficiency, wings modification), operational efficiency of air traffic control (Single European Sky), and reforms of the whole transport ecosystem (multi-modality). As the screen behind me indicates: there is no silver bullet to solve all challenges.
💡 Is the burden of decarbonisation placed solely on the industry? While having different angles on the problem, the industry stakeholders at least agree that the change should happen. The synergy between regulators, funds and companies is crucial, therefore getting them together at the conference was rewarding.
❓ There are open questions regarding the regulatory framework: does it set achievable targets? does it set clear definitions (e.g. low-carbon hydrogen)? does the final version of the regulation correspond to the initial goals (SES2+)? This shows me how much institutional interplay weighs on the scales of reforms.
✅ Challenges for 2024: SES, slots, SAF supply, SAF affordability, industry resilience, infrastructure and increased innovations. Quite a lot but aviation needs to be a priority. I was happy to hear from Jan-Christoph Oetjen that the long-awaited review of Air Services Regulation 1008/2008 is still on the table!
Next week the Belgian Presidency hosts a conference with a focus on social sustainability, so stay tuned for more ideas for the upcoming new Commission!
