Bard says… It's true that the visual effects (VFX) industry in film and television often deviates from the traditional RFP process for several reasons. Here's a breakdown of your questions: **Why don't they use RFPs?** * **Fast-paced environment:** Productions often have tight deadlines and need to move quickly, and the formal RFP process can be time-consuming. * **Pre-existing relationships:** Studios and VFX houses often have established relationships, built on trust and past collaborations, making RFPs less necessary. * **Specificity of VFX needs:** Describing complex VFX needs in an RFP can be challenging, and studios may prefer direct discussions with trusted vendors. * **Budget flexibility:** VFX costs can be fluid depending on the final design, making fixed proposals through RFPs impractical. **Origins of RFPs:** * RFPs arose in government and corporate procurement to ensure fairness and transparency in selecting vendors. * They offer a standardized process for comparing proposals based on specific criteria. **Who uses RFPs for VFX?** * Some larger studios or productions, especially for government-funded projects, may still use RFPs for accountability and legal reasons. * Smaller productions or independent filmmakers might use modified RFPs for broader outreach. **Consequences of skipping RFPs:** * **Lack of transparency:** Without defined selection criteria, companies risk favoring certain vendors or overlooking qualified options. * **Unequal competition:** Smaller vendors without established connections may struggle to compete. * **Potential legal issues:** For government-funded projects, skipping mandatory RFPs could lead to legal challenges. **Alternatives to RFPs:** * **Pre-qualified vendor lists:** Studios maintain lists of trusted VFX houses based on past performance and qualifications. * **Invitations to quote (ITQs):** Studios directly invite specific vendors to submit proposals based on the project's needs. * **Negotiation-based processes:** Studios negotiate directly with preferred vendors, adjusting budgets and scope as needed. Shooting for VFX can get quite technical, it's best to have someone from the VFX team or a VFX supervisor on set. However, on smaller projects, that might not be possible. Don't worry though!
