JLR partners with Allye Energy JLR has partnered with energy storage start-up, Allye Energy, to create a novel Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide zero emissions power on the go. A single Allye MAX BESS holds seven second-life Range Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEV battery packs that are removed from the vehicles and slotted into customised racks, without unnecessary additional processing. Each BESS can store 270kWh of energy at full capacity, enough to power the average UK household for nearly a month. The storage, which is the first to use JLR’s second life Range Rover batteries, can charge up to nine Range Rover PHEVs at any one time, and is designed to be charged by plugging it into any CCS-capable Vehicle Charger using the same input as JLR’s existing PHEV and BEV product portfolio. BESS in practice: accelerating electrification and circularity. Volvo Energy, together with Connected Energy, aims to facilitate the scaling-up of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and further secure circular business opportunities for the forthcoming ramp-up leveraging Volvo Group’s second-life battery returns. This innovative approach will revitalize the batteries and thereby offer significant environmental and economic benefits. For example, selected Volvo Trucks dealerships are today facing grid capacity constraints hindering installation of high-powered charge points for electric vehicles. Transitioning to electric trucks will require charge points with up to 50 times more power than current fast chargers for cars, posing a strain on energy production and distribution. To start with, two 300kW BESS systems from Connected Energy will address grid capacity issues by providing additional power to support high-capacity charging points at two UK sites - Volvo Truck & Bus service workshops in Carlisle, Cumbria, and Enfield, London. Energy storage systems help power Volvo truck dealerships Connected Energy is helping Volvo Trucks prepare for all-electric HGVs by installing battery energy storage systems to bring additional power onto two sites. Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland planned to install high-powered charge points at two of its service workshops for battery-powered HGVs and buses – Volvo Truck and Bus North & Scotland in Carlisle and Volvo Truck & Bus Centre London North, in Enfield. However, they found that neither site had a high enough import capacity from the grid to power the chargers. The transition to all-electric trucks requires charge points that can be up to 50 times more powerful than fast chargers for cars. This places a much bigger strain on energy supplies than car charging – with many organisations lacking the available electricity capacity to install the charging they require. Connected Energy, a leader in second-life battery energy storage systems, worked with each site to install their innovative 300kW E-STOR system.
