Monday was my last day at Catalina USA. While I am immensely grateful for the past three years there, I am excited to take what I learned about shopper marketing, retail media, personalization, data-fueled audience and measurement into my next role. What is next? Well, it's a little bit like a choose your own adventure story. I am more interested in the right opportunity versus just another opportunity. My 20 year marketing career has been in B2C and B2B marketing, and leadership roles in the CPG, Retail, and Supplement industries. My expertise covers brand and marketing strategy and execution, project management, product commercialization, digital media, and e-commerce. As a creative problem solver, I thrive on challenges, particularly in understand the customer journey, brand strategy, and ultimately how to move products in meaningful ways. My approach is customer-centric, developed from my career at various agencies and refined through various roles. This perspective has enabled me to craft effective go-to-market strategies, streamline B2C and B2B marketing operations, and develop impactful product marketing initiatives. I consider myself a servant leader and I think those I have managed throughout the years could attest to that. Struggling to get promoted in product marketing roles? Tips that have worked for me (and people I've had promoted) 👇 1️⃣ Talk to your manager about wanting a promotion. Your manager usually needs to advocate for you. Ask them for candid feedback and what it would take for you to succeed at that next step. 2️⃣ Understand how the promotion process works. ⚙️ Can you be promoted in the first year after you're hired? Who approves your promotion? Are there certain times of year when you can be promoted? If you don't know how it works, it's hard to strategize. 3️⃣ Make friends with the hiring committee. Often, a group of senior leaders will discuss your promotion before it's approved. Figure out who they are and find subtle ways to help them and their team(s). 4️⃣ Nail the skills. You could just not be ready, which is why #1 is so important. Figure out what skills you need and start chipping away at them. 5️⃣ Move on if you're just not in the right place at the right time. This is arguably my most important piece of advice. There's an element of luck in any promotion. The average tenure of a CMO is 24 months. Yikes!  This, according to M.T. Fletcher at Ad Age (link in comments). It's a depressing statistic, but perhaps it shouldn't be surprising. The CMO job is high-pressure and the metrics for success are often outside of a CMO's control. A change in CMO can also mean job uncertainty for marketing teams (as the new CMO often wants to bring in their own people) and for the agencies they work with. This tempo of change disrupts everyone involved in the marketing projects for a brand. And as I've heard from so many CMOs, it can feel like quicksand under your feet rather than the long-term stability that a corporate job used to bring. The quickened tempo of marketing (and perhaps most importantly, marketing projects) is why I started We Are Rosie in the first place. With constant change and the uncertainty it brings, it's nice to have an on-demand team of marketing experts at the ready for you. And as a marketer, it's nice to have the freedom and security (yes, that's right) of a flex career with many clients at once. Our community consists of marketing experts at all levels (including former CMOs) and they are working with some of the world's biggest brands on their own terms. It's a beautiful thing when the needs of the marketing business align with a better way to work for so many folks who want or need to work flexibly. And it is happening now. 

If you look at open roles in marketing operations today you will see a slew of senior manager or director titles. All of which have a mile-long list of responsibilities but that is another story. If you try to look for anything VP level or above it seems like it is non-existent. So this begs the question: Is a senior-level role realistically in the cards if you stick to marketing ops, or do you need to pivot to a different kind of position to fulfill your professional goals? 🔍 Product & Marketing Director: What Leads What? 🤔 Reflecting on the last six months of my job search journey, a recurring theme in my interviews for Product & Marketing Director roles has sparked an intriguing debate: What's more important—product or marketing? Having been a strong candidate for positions in two dynamic industries, where the decision ultimately leaned towards candidates with a heavier product management background, I'm prompted to ask, which qualities truly drive success? From my experience, I've observed brilliant technical and product-focused professionals who, despite their expertise, struggled because they lacked a consumer-centric approach. They often found it challenging to align with what consumers truly value and to effectively commercialize their products considering the 4 Ps (Product, Price, Place, Promotion), but especially how to effectively communicate a product. In these two processes, I dove deep into unfamiliar sectors, quickly gaining an understanding and forming a strategic vision that aligned with and aimed to transform each industry. My approach was comprehensive, blending powerful branding and precise market segmentation with a consumer-centric focus to propose potential innovations and market expansions. Despite my efforts and showcasing a rich skill set—from strategic thinking to a profound understanding of consumer behaviour—the feedback suggested a stronger showcase of my product management skills was needed. This has led me to ponder: What should lead in the delicate balance of product and marketing? How do we best measure the impact of each in leadership roles? Based on your experiences and observations, which do you believe holds more weight in driving a company's success? How have you seen these dynamics play out in your own career or industry? So happy for a talented Marketing Leader that I have known for a while. She has just been promoted internally from VP to CMO. This is the first time they have had a CMO - I think this a positive sign. Companies are investing in marketing and giving marketing a seat at the C-suite table. Our conversation came to career planning. Like many successful marketing senior leaders, she is looking at her 5 year future self and what she can do to reach her career goals. She asked me - what can I start doing now that will help me get my next big role? It might be 2 years before I am ready to move, but when I do, I want to make sure I have done everything I can to put myself in the right place both from external and internal efforts. She thought my advice would be useful to others so I thought I'd share: - Focus on building marketing knowledge - don't assume you know everything. The landscape is changing all the time, especially in areas like AI, data, and operations. Stay ahead of trends. - If you are focused on one region, try and gain experience with global markets - what can you learn from other segments. - Improve your LinkedIn profile and presence: Set a goal to post once a month / Share content about your team, your achievements, and your leadership style / Post about books you've read or industry insights / Use your marketing skills to tell the story of the leader you are and want to be. - Identify your values and what you want believe in. Align your online presence with these values and the job you want in the future - Surround yourself with partnerships and relationships with people you can learn from and you can also give some value back to them. It may come as a surprise, but a lot of senior marketers aren't great at selling themselves! It surprised me the first time I heard it from a senior candidate, as they had such fantastic commercial achievements and success in their career. But it has become a bit of a common theme. When it comes to getting noticed as a senior marketing leader, you need to be seen. Many senior roles aren't advertised, so you need to be visible to the people who would hire you. Not just focusing on the marketing community, but decision makers. You need to stand out from the crowd and be stood in plain sight!
