Lisa Etherson Lisa’s thinking about shame is deceptively simple but actually quite radical. She separates shame into the concept of ‘uncontained shame’ and ‘contained shame’. Uncontained shame is that terrible feeling we have when we feel we are bad or wrong. That’s the type of shame Brene Brown writes about. What Lisa adds to our thinking on shame is the idea of ‘contained shame’, all the things we do to avoid that uncontained shame feeling. Our shame containment strategies could be to be a people pleaser, for example, or to be aggressive when criticised - anything to keep ourselves away from the flood of uncontained shame. Lisa teaches this theory on our Diploma in Clinical Sexology and Relationship Therapy to add to our learning on shame in the context of sex and relationship therapy. We highly recommend you take a look into Lisa’s work. https://lnkd.in/eF3uKb4m

Even if you ultimately choose to go through with an #obligation, it is better to know why you are choosing it and to be fully #active in your life. Conversely, when something is felt or framed as #outofyourhands, there is no #questioning, shifting, #curiosity, or #disruption needed. Read more from Senior #Therapist Rachael Benjamin, LCSW:
