💪Closing a transformative week inspired by the remarkable leadership of individuals, discussions and initiatives highlighting the power of collaboration across the UK and beyond. Started the week off strong bringing together the Purpose Coalition Business Leadership Advisory Council, huge thanks to Sean Haley and the Sodexo UK and Ireland team for their hospitality, we engaged in dynamic conversation around socioeconomic diversity and breaking down barriers with a key commitment to measurement. A trip to the homeland meant reliving my own formative college years, with Liz Bromley, Chief Executive at NCG demonstrating just how crucial educational institutions are in driving societal change, support diverse communities, building student resilience and strengthening the talent pipeline. Followed by an eye opening tour of the Hitachi Rail, rolling stock manufacturing facility in Newton Aycliffe hosted by Jim Brewin and the team. Underscoring the importance of retaining high-skilled talent in the North East. We explored strategies to strengthen local talent pipelines, create attractive career pathways in advanced manufacturing, and integrate innovative technologies. This visit reaffirmed the crucial role of key employers like Hitachi Rail in the region’s economic regeneration. Closing with a roundtable focused on the Future of the North East Economy & Skills, in partnership with Leonardo UK & Sodexo UK and Ireland, bringing together stakeholders to strategise on enhancing the regional skills landscape. Huge thanks to Wendy Allen for hosting. Our discussions revolved around three core themes: 👩💻 Economic Climate and Skill Demands 🤝 Strategic Investment and Collaboration 🌱Actionable Strategies for Economic Growth 💡These sessions have reinforced our commitment to breaking down barriers to opportunity and driving forward an inclusive and thriving economy, feeling inspired! 😌Hope everyone has a great BH weekend. #EconomicGrowth #SkillsDevelopment #Collaboration #Innovation #PurposeCoalition

Best invest in Building and talking about Fusion power, space, maritime propulsion systems and industry as data centres are. Great Headline, Guardian on Nuclear fission. https://lnkd.in/g8sMZtpR People talk about Nuclear (meaning Fission) and fail to discuss fusion. https://lnkd.in/ge_aeX7M The nuclear fission industry is ignorant of what's happening around it. It must pull its collective uranium heads out of the sand and prepare to enter the commercially growing fusion energy industry. Fission is moving towards obsolescence at an ever-increasing pace, as it is "out of step, out of time, out of place, and soon to be out of Fuel" and merely temporary. https://lnkd.in/gbd_mZqk By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. The plant will produce at least 50 MWe after an initial ramp-up period. https://lnkd.in/gY9J3MQY Now, see what is happening in the world of the fusion industry. https://lnkd.in/g9hMBD7a As fission trebles, fuel shortage is increasingly real, https://lnkd.in/gze5rwpr

Fascinating discussions at the NW Growth 35 event hosted by Deloitte at Alliance Manchester Business School We explored how the Northwest region can drive productivity and growth - building more homes, improving transport infrastructure, delivering jobs and skills, and creating technical career pathways for young people. The day began with insight from political heavy hitters, facilitated by Jo Ahmed and Tim Grogan. And then onto a panel discussion on the role of sport and the cultural industries in driving social and economic benefits. A big thank you to our panellists Rachel Wilkey-Pinfield, Jon Dutton OBE, and John McGrath Factory International for sharing their valuable insights. My key takeaways: 🏢 A compelling sports and culture offer has the power to redefine a place - to the people who live, study and work there and to the outside world. ⚽️🎭 Sport and culture can play a unique role in delivering social outcomes, particularly by addressing intractable economic challenges in underserved communities 🤝 Local leadership and cross-sector collaboration are vital enablers for success. The North West region has a strong track record in this regard, but we can do more and work closely with local authorities to deliver benefits to the towns surrounding our major cities. 🌆 Manchester has an inspiring story to tell about building connections between world-class facilities, teams, athletes, artists, and local communities, driving both social and economic benefits. Looking forward to continuing this conversation to drive productivity, growth, and positive change in the North West region! 🚀 #NWGrowth35 #Productivity #Growth #Collaboration #NorthWest #DeloitteEvent Timothy Bridge Andy Tong James Savage

Taking my mind off sad things to-day I am mindful of the advice that I need to write 4 articles per week to get noticed so..... For those who havent yet read QUOTS (1) this was my first ever European project - 17 years later - why am I resurrecting it? Good question. You will know that in 2024 every country is crying out for skills, new skills for meeting the challenges of this and the next decade. How can they get them, without huge expense & time? By using something from long before 2007 - taken up by Europe and still within its vision of a skilled workforce to expand the economy we can identify & build on present skills, accredit them, move the workforce around, making best use of their experience. Why dont we do it, I just dont know? More @ https://lnkd.in/e6C_CkTG

If you are in Southern California and are able to attend the below panel would be a wealth of knowledge!! In a world where change is the only constant, staying ahead in your career often hinges on your ability to adapt and grow. But how do you ensure that your professional development is not just a box-ticking exercise, but a strategic move towards your ultimate career goals? Let's talk about intentional learning and its impact on career progression. Intentional learning is about choosing to learn skills and knowledge that align with your career aspirations. It's about being proactive in seeking out opportunities to grow, rather than waiting for them to come to you. Here are a few strategies to make your learning more intentional: 1. Set clear, achievable goals. Know what you want to accomplish in your career and identify the skills you need to get there. 2. Seek out resources. Whether it's online courses, workshops, or books, find quality materials that will help you gain those skills. 3. Apply what you learn. Theory is great, but practice is better. Look for ways to apply new knowledge in your current role. 4. Reflect on your progress. Take time to consider what you've learned and how it's helping you move forward. Remember, the most successful professionals are not just those who are knowledgeable, but those who are constantly learning and adapting. If you're ready to take your professional development to the next level, start by identifying one skill you want to develop this quarter. Then, take the first step today to find a resource that will help you learn that skill. I'd love to hear your thoughts on intentional learning. What strategies have worked for you? Share your experiences in the comments below. Let's keep the conversation going and continue to support each other in our growth journeys. #ProfessionalGrowth #CareerDevelopment #LifelongLearning#Maritz#Meetingsmeanbusiness

Today, Chris Golby, PhD, Lumien’s CEO is attending the exclusive British Chambers of Commerce Future of the Economy Boosting Skills event alongside noted luminaries such as the Rt Hon Baroness Nicky Morgan and Baroness Ruby McGregor -Smith CBE Packed with insights, the event has yielded a couple of especially pertinent ones: In Q4 2023, 59% of companies didn’t have a staff training plan, and 76% faced severe recruiting difficulties*. We don’t believe in coincidences. Those businesses who fail to deliver education, L&D and training as a naturalised component of their EVP, are typically the businesses whose cultures arise from a lack of development, guidance, expectation and accountability. Wholly organic cultures that risk perpetuating the struggle in attracting, hiring and most importantly retaining more of the right people to thrive, even in favourable economic conditions. An example of this is the Hospitality industry, where culture is often spoken about as being key, but isn’t always resourced, activated nor followed through on. So it’s no wonder that 82% of firms in the hospitality sector reported significant challenges in hiring staff*. And by “significant challenges”, we mean the inability find, hire and keep any talent, let alone the right talent to thrive. As the Rt Hon Baroness Nicky Morgan puts it “Lifelong learning opens up new opportunities, helps create personal fulfilment, and enables us to play our part in a thriving economy.” *Future of the Economy - British Chambers of Commerce – People and Work 2024

As well as participating in the CN Leaders Summit last week, I was also lucky enough to virtually attend B Lab UK's Louder Than Words Festival Speakers, including Mary Portas OBE, Patrick Grant FRSA, Farhana Yamin, Anuradha Chugh, Chris Skidmore, and Cynthia Davis CBE, led sessions that focused on how we can change the UK economy for the better, while driving justice, equity, inclusion and diversity. I was particularly struck by Mary Portas’ inspiring words: "Desire is the most powerful driver of human behaviour." It made me think about the steps we need to take to truly deliver the positive change in business that we’re all aspiring towards. 🧑🤝🧑Actions will always speak louder than words. Even if we don’t get them perfectly right to start with, it’s better to set actionable goals and hold ourselves accountable, rather than waiting for the right solution to magically present itself. Actions can always be tweaked, but we won’t know until we try. 🤝In business we’ve traditionally focused on competition with other companies, but I think it’s great to immerse yourself in a community that’s dedicated to driving change for our people and planet. Surrounding ourselves with other inspirational leaders and learning from them is a brilliant way to achieve our own goals. ♻️If you want to see positive change in the world, you can’t sit around and hope it will happen, you have to be that change you want to see. Whether that’s through volunteering, learning, taking steps to be more green or adjusting your business operations, it all starts with us. #BCorpFestivalUK #Louderthanwords #BCorp #LeaveNoOneBehind
